4-H Leaders Learn Sewing Skills at Columbus Center

On March 27 thirteen 4-H leaders from Polk County trained at Singer Sewing Center Columbus to teach young seamstresses. The session covered machine operation maintenance and cleaning across models. Instructor Mrs. Leona Komrofske led the class joined by Mesdames Kries Olson Mickey Buchta Powell Lampres Kreis Frizzell Nyberg Peterson Lux Dunn Deremus and Miss Crosby. The county extension council plans a regular Osceola meeting April 9.

Lizard Walstead received word Monday of the sudden death of his brother Elmer in Chicago where he had been employed this winter. Mr and Mrs Walstead left immediately for Chicago for further particulars.

The electors of Stromsburg approved condemnations to take over the Gas Company's distribution system by a 354 to 252 vote. Voters showed strong turnout for the pro seizing measure.

First Baby Born In New Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital

The first baby boy born at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital is Russell Jeffrey Shostrom. He weighed four pounds at birth and will stay in hospital until reaching five pounds. Osceola City and School Officials Elected in Tuesday Vote

Incumbent mayor Fred Bond ran unopposed and won 210 votes across North and South Wards in Osceola. Council write ins plus candidates Milan Snodgrass and Raymond Sedlak were noted, with Norman Fintel leading as Police Magistrate. In the school election Calmar Herrmann and Paul Monson secured short term seats, while Earl Watts and Wesley Peterson topped the three year term slate.

Axel Nelson 78 died Saturday March 31 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital. He resided at Social Center Rest Home for about 27 years. Survived by one daughter in Grand Island. Services held at Kepner Funeral Home Tuesday at 10 30 AM with interment in Osceola Cemetery.

Donald Lindblade aged 21 died at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital near noon on Tuesday April 3 after a month as a medical patient. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Friday April 6 at Stromsburg Lutheran Church with the body remaining at the church from noon until service time.

Rain and hail bring brief relief to dry farmland

A Monday shower delivered about an inch of rain with severe hail. The hail caused little damage due to crop growth, leaving the ground white with pellets. The moisture offered a welcome boost to wheat and other crops already planted after months of drought.

Soldier Deploys to Germany in Gyroscope Rotation

Pvt. Duane E. Henggeler left Fort Sill Oklahoma for Germany March 27 as part of Operation Gyroscope the Army unit rotation plan. The 18 year old clerk in the battalion entered the Army last September and completed basic training at Camp Chaffee Ark. Henggeler is the son of Mrs. Sylvan Fox Stromsburg.

Blood Mobile to Visit Shelby on Monday April 23

Red Cross Blood Mobile scheduled to visit Shelby at Parish Hall on Monday April 23 as part of periodic Polk County town visits. The Salisbury unit aims for 144 donor recruits to secure 120 pints of blood, with Polk County residents urged to volunteer and help meet post screening needs.

First Airplane Ride for 84 Year Old Lady

Mrs Dollie Fineey aged 84 of Silver Creek Nebraska became the first white girl born in Polk County to ride in an airplane. Ivan Gering of St Edwards Nebraska arranged the trip for her grandson’s friend. She has lived her life in Polk and Merrick counties and hopes for another flight.

House To House Cancer Campaign Set For April 9

The Osceola district chairs the annual house-to-house cancer drive on April 9 with Mrs. Martin Roberts as Osceola chairman. Local precinct leaders include Mrs. Fjell South Hackberry township Mrs. Campbell Swede Home and Mrs. Lisco Island township as part of the national drive launching with the Ed Sullivan show. Community cooperation is sought to fund education and expand medical services for cancer patients as one in four Americans face the disease. A donation to the American Cancer Society supports protection for families and personal action against cancer.
