The Common Council met Monday with President Eliza presiding. Mud on Montgomery Street near the O W crossing was flagged for investigation. The Giles-Giles Co asked to add to the James H Smith Building on North Street. Reports from fire and police chiefs were filed along with January treasurer receipts of 34 869 43. A budget request of 51 for Memories Day was referred to Ways and Means. Committees were appointed to draft an ordinance and address lighting near Benton Avenue school. Erie and Jersey Line Boosts Freight by Rail Traffic
With the Erie and Jersey Rail road opening between Newburgh Junction and Guymard, through freight increases to 20 to 22 coal and freight trains daily. New coaling at Highland Mills cuts engine prep time to about ten minutes, enabling crews to reach Port Jervis and Jersey City terminals. Several main-line towers close as the line shifts to automatic operation, and an experimental Western Electric telephone plant may move trains under direct city-office communication. The railroad plans one eastbound and one westbound express train when the new timetable is issued on the third Sunday in June.

Annual Ball a Great Social and Financial Success
The second annual reception and ball of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers Division 26 of the N O and W system was held at Linden Hall on Monday evening. Attendance exceeded 110 couples with many out-of-town guests. A grand march opened the festivities, music by Kuhl's orchestra accompanied formal dancing. Supper followed the first program portion, served by the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Telegraphers, and the event concluded at a late hour with attendees returning home.
