19 Valuable Dogs Poisoned in Chester

Chester authorities search for a suspect after 19 valuable dogs were poisoned in the last week. Among victims are a registered beagle owned by Dr. C. P. Smith and a fox hound owned by W. H. Smith. Clues to the culprit are scarce.

Monroe Fire Company Seeks Truck And Gear

At the March meeting of the Mombasha Fire Company in Monroe officials discussed converting the old hand drawn ladder truck to motor, purchasing new coats and boots, audit appointments for Frank Reed Charles Brooks and Raymond Steele, and welcomed new member Bruce Kniffin. A stag supper and events for local groups were announced as part of a busy community weekend with residents returning from travels and attendance at a basketball game in Maybrook.

Monroe Boy Scouts Hear Rev Austin at Meeting

At the Monroe Boy Scouts troop meeting on Monday night about twenty five scouts attended. The troop committee included Dr J R Sutherland C A Brooks and Clarence B Knight. Rev Austin, pastor of the Monroe M E church, spoke on the history of noted men who were scouts. Robert Beattie Jr returned to school after a two week illness. William Steele in Goshen for dental work. Richard Dunn reported better. William Leese Jr operated on for appendicitis February 24 at Goshen Emergency Hospital.

York appointed administrator of Wallkill estate

Mrs Minnie E York is named an administrator of the estate of the late Minnie E Morgan in Wallkill. The estate is valued about 9000 dollars and includes a Wallkill farm and a Middletown two family house with land. Dorothy Brown reports her brother Eric found a live potato in the garden last week, seen as a sign.

Captain Johnston saved a baby in a 1895 fire and later met the grateful Mrs. Hilda Kern Wennin in Brooklyn. The veteran firefighter, retired in Monroe, recounts rescue feats and his long service in New York Fire Department.

Grand Jury Session Opens in Sullivan County

Supreme Court Justice Joseph Rosch presided as the Sullivan County grand jury met briefly. One case of perjury against Lena Shapiro was continued, no indictments returned, foreman William Manion led the panel, and the jury was discharged after a short session. A habeas corpus case over custody of three Hendrickson children proceeded with testimony from William J Hendrickson and his wife. The court considered custody arrangements and support payments of nine dollars weekly.
