The W. R. Neeriemer Lumber Co. of this city is making improvements at its plant near the depot. They have demolished the old building next to the street and moved a lumber shed to the former branding site, enhancing the facility’s appearance.
A nameless man with a gray moustache recalls a recent lesson that put him in good shape for reflection. A stout man teased him as the garage crew laughed at a mishap, while a boy recounted a troubling tale about someone not recovering.
Halloween night drew many youths to the school exercises and street festivities. Masks filled the streets while corn was scattered. About 46 bales of wire from Joliftt Hardware Co. rolled onto Main Street and buggies and wagons were piled at the Main and Spring Street intersection. The piece notes the boys’ antics contrast with modern sensibilities.
Net proceeds of 1.2 Hallowe'en entertainment were $13.05. A good crowd attended and all enjoyed the evening. Miss Rud Hewett of Aogiesville joined the Junior class. Ross Correll leaves this work to enter Belford school. Blackboards arrived for two rooms and will be placed soon. Geometry class began Book V this week and is doing good work. Candy and crackers for Hallowe'en sale were made by Domestic Science. Manual Training classes leave the tables for the kitchen nearly completed. A basketball game with Lyons is set for Oct 8 at Lyons and another with Bedford on Oct 14. Grade cards for the second month arrive Friday. parents should see these as the report to them.
John Humerickhouse and Miss Bessie Sturgell, noted young residents of Washington, were married on Monday. They traveled from Washington to Palestine Illinois to visit Mrs Humerickhouse's sister for a few days. The bride is the youngest daughter of J H Sturgess, proprietor of the Enterprise store, and recently moved from Illinois with her parents. The groom is Emanuel Humerickhouse's youngest son, a rising farmer who will manage the family farm south of town while his father plans to move to Od on Main Street once the new home is ready.
Petitions for two bridges across the east fork of the White River were presented to the county commissioners. One bridge would connect Daviess Pike and Dubois counties two miles south of Hudsonville with about 150 signatures. The second would cross at Harriman's ferry linking Daviess and Pike counties with over 400 signatures. Similar petitions were heard at Petersburg as the Daviess board deferred action.
Alms Morton, eleven, daughter of Zed Morton of Washington, was badly burned Saturday morning while playing with a lit candle that set her dress on fire. Her mother rolled her on the floor to smother the flames, burning the right arm and right side of her face though the burns are not deep.
The St Joseph parochial residence burned Friday afternoon after a kitchen flare up. Firefighters saved little, with the priest losing his library and most belongings. The two story frame building suffered about 1500 dollars in losses, insured in part. The priest was burned on the neck and back but escaped serious harm.
In the town election 190 cast ballots for town board members, clerk and treasurer, marshal, with Cooper winning the 2nd ward council seat by 19 votes. Officials named: Guthrie trustee 1st ward, Cooper trustee 2nd ward, Helm marshal, Breuden clerk-treasurer.
Morton McPherson a Montgomery druggist and local figure died at 5 30 pm Tuesday at his brother Dr S I McPherson home in Washington of typhoid fever. He was 50, born near Indian Springs Martin County on September 28 1868. He taught in Iowa 1883 1889 before returning to Daviees County.
The Elnora election produced a quiet turnout with 177 of about 225 voters casting ballots. The Citizens ticket swept all seats with the closest race in the 3rd Ward where Stalcup beat Wales by five votes.
Mrs Urbana Haig a long time resident died at her South Grove home last Wednesday at 7 30 PM cause general debility She was born in Indiana in 1834 aged 78 married Joh Haig in 1853 and had seven children five survive Asa Haig Vincennes Wm Haig Indianapolis Mrs Janie Nicholson Nebraska Mrs Carrie Dearmin Newberry and Mrs Mattie Bondarant Missouri Also two brothers Geo Crooke Newberry Anderson Crooke Lyons and two sisters Mrs Mack Catron Newberry and Mrs Keith Jasonville Her husband died about seventeen years ago Funeral at the residence at ten o clock with Rev F A Leiter burial Walnut Hill She was a member of the M E church.
Joseph E Bell Democrat won the Indianapolis mayoralty by a margin of 8 878 in unofficial returns. Johnson Progressive and Bookwalter Republican also appear in the third district race results.
The Newberry election saw light turnout about 65 percent. The Citizens ticket won with Trustee 1st ward S. A. Guthery 61 over W. M. Wesner 30. Clerk and treasurer A. G. Crook 47 over S. W. Slinkard 34. Marshal Marion Brinson 50 over Daniel Axe 34.
In Montgomery the Democratic ticket won all seats on the ballot except one trustee who was elected from the citizens ticket, with Walter Sanders the sole beneficiary.
