Silvia Holland Dies After Year Long Illness at 12

Silvia Holland daughter of Mr and Mrs John Holland died at home in the west end after a year long illness from lung trouble. Born August 1 1895 she was 12 years 9 months and 1 day old. She was a student in Oden public schools and attended Sunday School. Her classmates sent flowers and attended the funeral. She leaves a father a mother and several brothers. Funeral held at home Sunday at 7:50 Rev C C Lowther officiated burial at Walnut Hill cemetery.

First Republican National Convention Dates and Nominations

The piece notes the first Republican national convention was in Philadelphia on June 17 1856 after a Pittsburg meeting on February 22 1856. John C Fremont and William J Dayton were unanimously nominated for president and vice president. A slavery focused platform was adopted and they were defeated by Buchanan and Breckinridge. Lincoln was nominated at Chicago on May 16 1860 with Hannibal Hamlin as VP. Lincoln beat Douglas Breckinridge and Bell with 180 electoral votes to 12 72 and 39 respectively.

Plainville Poultry House Fire Near E I Depot

A two story poultry house operated by C W Jean of Worthington near the E I depot in Plainville burned around noon Monday. Loss to the building listed at 2500 and stock in the vicinity 200. Cause uncertain linked to sparks from a passing train or nearby sawmill. A bucket brigade fought the blaze, saving part of the structure and extinguishing it after a hard effort. Boston L Foust is the local agent. An ice business also operated in the same building.

Night Rider tale from Posey county tobacco crop

A farmer near Owensville Indiana faced night riding by his two sons aged thirteen and eleven who cut switches and posted threats at the door. The father retaliated by placing switches in their clothes and a note inviting them to the barn at 7 AM. He then planted a tobacco bed that became the pride of the neighborhood as the boys showed off their crop.

Bidaman Kills Burglar in Terre Haute Home

Edwin J. Bidaman former Terre Haute mayor woke to a burglar attempting entry and shot the intruder, who died instantly. Police reported no further injuries. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning at Bidaman’s residence.

Samuel Holstine was cleared of assault and battery against James Wilson in the circuit court Tuesday. The case originated in Elnora justice court where Holstine was found guilty and fined one cent.

Linton Team Wins Big Four Track Meet At Washington

Linton won first place at the Big Four athletic meet held in Washington on a Saturday afternoon, with Washington in second. Moss set a new 1907 record in the 100 yard dash at ten and two fifths seconds. Seven events broke 1907 records as Vincennes won the mile relay in a thrilling race. Oratorical contest at the opera house followed with Miss Elsie Wallace of Princeton winning original oration and Miss Irene Browsing of Evansville taking reading honors. Awards included gold medals for first, silver for second, and white ribbons for third. Vincennes received the loving cup, and Linton the banner for most points. Next year’s meet will be at Princeton.
