First National Democratic Convention And Early Nominees

The first national Democratic convention met in Baltimore on May 20, 1835, nominating Martin Van Buren for president and Richard M. Johnson for vice president. No platform or address was issued. Van Buren led with 170 of 294 electoral votes. Johnson's minority totaled 147, and the vice presidency went to Francis Granger after a Senate vote. A later Baltimore convention on May 5, 1840 renominated Van Buren and Johnson, who were defeated by Whigs Harrison and Tyler in 1840.
