An elderly Confederate veteran recalls meeting President Lincoln after a Civil War battle near Sharpsburg. The exchange saved his life via a Bible inscribed by Lincoln, with verses guiding him through war and peace, shaping his view of the Union and postwar life.
The first national Democratic convention met in Baltimore on May 20, 1835, nominating Martin Van Buren for president and Richard M. Johnson for vice president. No platform or address was issued. Van Buren led with 170 of 294 electoral votes. Johnson's minority totaled 147, and the vice presidency went to Francis Granger after a Senate vote. A later Baltimore convention on May 5, 1840 renominated Van Buren and Johnson, who were defeated by Whigs Harrison and Tyler in 1840.
The Linton group led by James Mahan Henry Gastineau and William Heitman will develop the property at the receiver s gate a week after purchasing it from the Daviess County Coal Company.
A May 21 York Pennsylvania item notes a large 30 inch Merry Widow hat worn by Miss May McMurdo during a local parade. The gaudy headpiece drew attention as part of festive celebrations.
