Serious accident at Arney home injures toddler

Four miles southwest of town farmer Jonas Arney reports his three year old son Adam fell into a bucket of boiling water mixed with lye while playing near the yard. Dr Ira Bovman attended and treated the child who remains in serious condition.

Archibald Butt Memorial Columns Under Construction

Correll and Burrell Monuments Works received the contract to craft four columns and four life-size lions for the Archibald Butt Memorial dedicated to Major Archibald Butt, victim of the Titanic disaster. The bridge is being built in Georgia, with the model lions arriving from New York City last week as construction proceeds.

Annual Oden High School book issued for sale

The first annual issued by the Oden High School was completed at the Journal Office Wednesday and copies are now on sale. The 100 page volume features about thirty half tones of students and faculty, with etched work by students, a heavy black cover with enamel green design, and green silk binding. A valuable souvenir expected to be kept by those fortunate enough to secure one.

In Elnora Indiana the N G Myers Meat Shop was entered through rear doors left unlocked near the top and bottom. Thieves took meat groceries and a box of Havana Ribbon cigars before fleeing. Some meat was mutilated and left in the alley the next morning.

Baccalaureate Services At Odon High School

The baccalaureate services for the Odon High School graduating class were held at the U B church with a large attendance. Rev. Trusty from the Christian church delivered the address on The Appeal of Modern Life to the Educated Man. Special music by Miss Ornha Cole and A Breden, with The Odon Orchestra, completed the program.

Osborne L Bailey Dies in Lead South Dakota at 20

Osborne L Bailey son of Dennis Bailey formerly of Gdlon died at his parents home in Lead South Dakota Tuesday April 22 after a long illness. He was born in Salem Indiana in July 1692 and was 20 years and 9 months old. His parents moved from Salem to East Odon then to North Dakota about twelve years ago. He worked for Home stake company in his hometown for four years until health forced him to quit six months ago. Burial was in Lead South Dakota.

Stone for Monument Arrives After Delays

Two car loads of stone for the Washington soldiers' monument have arrived after delays caused by a shipment loss and a flood. The project, previously stalled for several weeks, now proceeds with the arrival of the material.

Large crowd attends Odon High School commencement

The Odon High School graduation ceremony was held Tuesday night at the M. E. church, the largest church in town, with Rev. Cloyd Goodnight of Shelbyville delivering the address on The By products of an Education. Special music by Miss Orpha Cole and the Wh. Bair quartet plus the Oron orchestra highlighted the program. The thirteen graduates received diplomas as the church was lavishly decorated.

State adopts truancy law detailing attendance officers rules

The new school attendance law outlines appointment of attendance officers in counties and cities starting May first with terms beginning in August. County boards appoint officers, cities may form districts, and eligibility requires completing eighth grade. Officers earn two dollars per day, with detailed staffing by city population. Child enrollment and age requirements for school attendance are specified.

Convention in Bloomfield Serves District Churches

The annual district convention of the Christian churches is in session at Bloomfield this week. It embraces Greene Sullivan Knox Daviess Martin and Lawrence counties. Several Odon residents attend. The program opened at 2 55 P M with Sunday School and State Missions as the main discussion topics. The meeting will close in sessions of the Christian Woman's Board of Missions this afternoon.

Sullivan votes day in dry victory by 128 votes

By a majority more than twice as large as two years ago, Sullivan's dry forces won the local option election by 128. Every ward favored prohibition with First ward ahead by 16, Servad by 41, and Third by 71. Two years ago Sullivan voted dry by 59.

Bicknell Girl Dies by Her Own Action

Agnes Robinson eighteen daughter of Ottis Robinson committed death by own action at Bicknell Thursday evening around five using strychnine. Her body found after supper by her father and Horace her brother who had cared for the family since the mother’s death two years ago. A note to her brother said I think I'm in the way and I'll make my exit now. Please be a good boy. I do not want any funeral services.

County Board of Review to Begin Annual Session Next Monday

Hugh Morgan and Howard Allison named freeholder members by Judge J. W. Ogden in circuit court. The board includes the county treasurer, auditor and assessor with the assessor as president and the auditor as secretary. It reviews and equalizes tax assessments.

County Commencement Set for June First in Washington

County Superintendent A O Fulkerson reports 12 of 34 graduates from the April 24 common branches exams across multiple townships. Commencement exercises will be June 1 at the First Christian Church in Washington with address by Dr George R Greie, new DePauw University president.

White Sox Edge Linton in Frigid Opener 4-3

In a cold Sunday clash at Southside Park the White Sox defeated Linton Gold Blumes 4 to 3. Pitcher H Sears starred in a tight game as the Sox pulled ahead with three runs in the third inning and another in the sixth, despite chilly conditions and few errors.
