The residence of William Jackson a prosperous farmer three miles north of Odon was burned Friday night and the entire contents were destroyed The fire was discovered by Jackson about three o clock Saturday morning when he saw light from the window He awoke his family and guided them to safety as the house collapsed The loss was about 1500 with 700.
Barr Township bonds totaling 17 500 were sold by Geo Drew trustee at the Washington office of Hastings Allen and Hastings. Indianapolis firm Breed Elliott and Harrison purchased the full amount at bid of 162 premium with accrued interest as several bidders competed.
A city school teacher charged with shooting Ottis Fisher a Muncie drug clerk enters a special plea of insanity via her attorneys claiming she brooded over a sisterly grievance and lost control. A special venire has been called for the trial set to begin next Monday in Muncie Court.

The Loogootee Tribune reports Walter Haig signed with manager Cushing to play for the Washington Grays next season, joining Asa Haig in Washington papers that claim both father and son enter the team. President Wilson appointed Daniel Gants of this city as postmaster and he will assume office once commission arrives. The office pays likely salary and duties to be determined.
A major blaze devastated Sandborn about 15 miles west of here last Friday night. The fire started in M. Gregory’s general store when a lamp exploded a gasoline tank, destroying multiple businesses including the Methodist church. Fire protection was limited, bucket brigades formed, and losses reach many thousands with insurance partial. The hotel nearly burned, the L and W depot burned but survived, and the town suffers a hard economic blow.
A Linton party caught a 54 lb catfish in White River near Elnora and sold the fish to N G Myers meat market after photographing it. They also landed nearly a barrel of smaller catfish weighing from a half to 12 lbs.

Reports filed with County Superintendent A. O. Fulkerson show a sharp drop in the 1918 school census compared to 1912. The 1918 total fell by 489, with 1913 totaling 8,516 after last year’s 9,005. a table next lists the year by year figures and gains or losses.
The cases against Thomas Nugent former county auditor were scheduled for hearing on May 20 and 21 in Daviess circuit court. Nugent’s defense teams include Gardiner Tharp Gardiner Hastings Allen Hastings Mattingly Myers A J Padgett Thomas Seal and Edgar Laughlin. A motion seeks the prosecuting attorney Flavian A Seal to transfer papers he may hold in the matter.
The G A R Post reports the thirty fourth annual Grand Army encampment at Indianapolis on May 21 22 and 23. Loyal Legion and posts of the G A R B R and camps of the Spanish War Veterans will keep open house at their headquarters during the encampment and invite visiting comrades. Gov. Ralston has issued a May 1 start for 360 laws with several not active until later. Auto tax and other acts take effect July 1 and October 12 Discovery Day sets new rules. Widespread reforms include schooling, public utilities, housing, licensing, salaries, and the state song change.
The Co operative Co held a meeting at Poindexter Laughlin's furniture store to arrange a new switchboard. The old board is inadequate for rising tolls, and a 200 drop board will be bought. Committee members are W R Neeremer Mack Flynn and Thomas Wirts. Installation will occur promptly.
Oil well number three on the Wuertz farm was shot at about 3 PM Tuesday. A bridge formed in the hole after 100 quarts of nitro glycerin exploded, throwing water 20 to 25 feet. Tin cans blocked the hole, surgeons began removing the bridge as the casing was lowered. Five feet of the bridge were removed by morning, with a new well planned on the Shanks farm behind the John G. Shanks residence.
