Thousands of lives lost as floods inundate Dayton Ohio to depths of up to forty feet. Over 200 reported dead at Peru with survivors on a hill amid rising waters. Homes destroyed leaving many homeless and emergency response underway.
A statewide Indiana flood wrecked Peru on the South Side driving hundreds from homes. Reports say 200 to 400 killed, 20 000 homeless, $20 000 000 in damage as Governor Ralston is urged to send coffins provisions and clothing. Rescuers race to reach Peru by rail and boat.
A Sunday incident in El Mora saw Bedford Chief Woodruff and Odon Marshal Foriannon arrest Thomas Parham for contributing to delinquency. They traveled from Bedford to Odon then Plainville to locate Parham, who was taken to Bedford for detention with a wife and young daughter at home.
Carl Harlin reported his horse and buggy stolen Saturday night from the Elnora hitch rack near Tomer Bras ice house. The outfit was found near Linton by Mr Martin after a search spanning towns and postal notices to police. Two boys were seen driving the rig through Lyons Saturday night.
A historic flood overwhelmed the county with nonstop rain over Monday night and Tuesday. Gutters failed, bridges washed away, and train service halted as water rose to dangerous depths in Washington and surrounding areas. Rescue teams saved residents from flooded homes while police worked to evacuate those in peril near the station and bakery stables. Local mail service collapsed and the Journal remains the sole available newspaper in the region.
The town of Elnora endures its worst flood yet as Cherokee residents flee. Lizzie Smith and her baby, with Daisy Mitchell, are moved to the Disbor house during a heavy rain, aided by Miller and Ketchem. Train service is interrupted due to washouts and track damage.
Dam break at Lewiston Reservoir releases a wall of water flooding Dayton and neighboring towns. Thousands reported dead and tens of thousands homeless as homes, power, and water collapse. Fire, debris, and rising rivers compound the disaster with boats struggling to reach trapped residents.
In Tipton Missouri Gideon Houser a pharmacist at Odor Drug Co faced charges for taking stock of goods and assuming management on a Friday. California Mo is cited in connection with the prior involvement of the Gideon Houser case.
