United States Department of Agriculture advises on winter care for colts and hog cholera prevention. Emphasizes vaccination by veterinarians, proper umbilical care, disinfected stables, clean bedding, and burning litter. Discusses risks at local hog yards, vaccination, and improved herd management to boost meat supply and reduce disease spread.
Wisconsin found ground soybeans outperform wheat middlings by about 10 percent as a hog fattening supplement. Indiana showed soybeans with cornmeal or separately with tankage yield the largest daily gains and lowest feed per pound. Kansas reports 18 to 37 percent larger gains from four fifths corn or kafir with one fifth soybeans. Missouri found soybean meal, linseed meal, and tankage equally effective for young hog growth.
Maine county agents and farm bureaus report a 15 percent rise in hog numbers since a pork production campaign. Self feeders, expanded from small use in 1917, led to more hogs kept and 45 additional feeders now in use with 2,600 more hogs raised.
