An early 20th century dispute escalated to a knife fight in which Charles Hobbs and John Kennedy supported Barger. After friends wounded, Kennedy was killed by a gunshot fired by Barger or his ally as the crowd moved. A subsequent attempt on Hobbs and Barger missed.
The government gunboats returned to Panama on Sunday with news Agua Dulce fell on Thursday June 19. Government forces pursued rebels as over 100 sol dters previously captured were recaptured. The convoy carried 300 head of cattle and a sailing easel full of produce.
A Sioux City branch train on the Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha line jumped the track near Ashton Minnesota on a Sunday morning. Two trainmen were killed five seriously injured and many passengers received minor injuries. Doctors treated the wounded and the train continued its journey. The wreck was blamed on a misplaced switch and the train was said to have been traveling at high speed.
A fragmented OCR notice reports deliberate attempts to wreck a circus train. Details are unclear but imply threats surrounding a Poplar area warning and inked initials.
Secretary Root reports total Philippine war costs to date at 170 274 586 with 4 803 443 for troop movements by rail. He notes ships, horses, and equipment remain in the islands and some costs reflect troop maintenance not tied to combat. By mid fiscal year 1961 American forces drop from 70 000 to about 23 000 as orders send units home.

In Terre Haute Indiana on June 23 a police officer struck an 18 year old boy during a Sunday doubleheader with Rock Island. The youth fell unconscious and the officer was knocked down as the crowd surged. The special policeman was escorted to a patrol wagon and several arrests were reported as the boy remained in critical condition.
A telegram from Wanatah reports Nelson N Reynolds and his wife and three children drowned in a Tennessee flood. Only a daughter survived as the family, visiting Tennessee, was swept away when a bridge they crossed was carried into a raging river. The group had planned to return to LaPorte County.
The Indiana Sunday-school union state convention in Terre Haute Indiana concluded after three days with an address by Marion Lawrence field secretary. Officers elected for the coming year include President W. C. Hell Indianapolis first vice president W. E. Felt Greenfield and second vice president Josiah Orris.
The Indiana district athletic tournament held Sunday in Louisville drew seventy two contestants from Indianapolis Terre Haute Evansville Tell City and Louisville. Three societies entered team and individual events across field and apparatus tasks with Herman Irrgang of Indianapolis and Hellen of Louisville delivering top performances. Socialer Turn Verein of Indianapolis won first place in both classes one and two for team events.
Senator Faly Banks of Indiana presented Col. Jas B. Coryell of Philadelphia and other committee members who invited the president to attend the third national encampment of Spanish-American war veterans in Indianapolis in September. The president expressed a desire to be present if arrangements can be made.
Fourteen Butler College students received the bachelor of arts degree at the college chapel on Thursday. One student earned the master of arts degree. Diplomas were presented by Addison C. Harris, president of the University of Indianapolis. Prof. Herbert Th Willett of the University of Chicago gave the address on education's place and value.
Frank Erwin of Fort Wayne was assaulted and robbed by three known men on Sunday morning in Decatur Indiana. A heavy rock fractured his skull and left him badly cut. he was intoxicated and expected to die before recovery. The suspects escaped with $18 and a watch.
D R Ballentine of Noblesville Indiana underwent neck surgery Thursday June 20 after sustaining fractures. Surgeons straightened the cord and realigned fractures in a procedure described as successful.
