Life of L D Vickers Noted County Stock Buyer Passes

L D Vickers died after a lingering illness on June 15 at age 67 from tuberculosis. Born March 1, 1849, he married Johanna Piper on June 3, 1868 and had seven children, four predeceased him, with survivors Ada Marshal and Asier Vickers of Burns City and Clara Myers of Indiana polis. He leaves seven grandchildren. Funeral held at Burns City M E church with Rev. J W Towbridge officiating. burial in Burns City cemetery.

40 000 Men Are Wanted in Kansas for Wheat Harvest

Kansas seeks 40000 harvest hands to work the big wheat crop with 15 to 20 days needed for harvest and threshing. Applicants should inquire at the post office. J McBride, state labor commissioner, based in Topeka, Kan, will direct arrivals in that city. Scarcity of labor nationwide may hinder recruitment.

Death in Calamity Near Loogootee Claims Robert E. King Jr

Robert Emmet King Jr a well known Martin county resident was killed Monday afternoon when his seven passenger Buick left the road near Loogootee and overturned. John Clarke of Loogootee rode with him as fire broke out and bystanders pulled King free though his injuries were fatal. Dr J S Michael reported extensive bone damage from the crash and coroner Poindexter was notified.

Southern Indiana Band Opens Street Concert in Oden

The Southern Indiana Band, regarded as one of the region’s best, will give its first regular street concert next Wednesday in Oden. The program starts about 7 PM and features solos, both vocal and instrumental. Citizens are invited to attend.

Barn Hit by Lightning Burns Farm Near Here

Lightning struck the Walter Norris Farm barn six miles south of town at 11 o clock Tuesday night. The blaze destroyed the barn and its contents including a calf and farm machinery. Estimated loss about 1200 dollars.

Maude Allen Stars in The Rug Maker's Daughter at Star

Maude Allen appears in Bosworths oriental American drama The Rug Maker's Daughter at the Star in Odon. The plot follows Bob Van Buren rescuing Demetra, their elopement to America, Osman’s pursuit, and a dramatic New York confrontation ending in marriage. Star Orchestra will perform oriental music and Allen dances, with a China china giveaway for ladies.

Close pitching duel ends in sixth as White Sox and Bloomington tie

In Bloomington the Odon White Sox and Bloomington fought a near perfect pitchers duel with only one hit in six innings. Garrett produced the lone safety while Williams allowed no hits and fanned twelve. Bloomington’s Fultz held the Sox to one scratch hit as both teams stranded runners and weather dampened attendance, leading to future clashes scheduled for next Sunday.

Burns Hackler Dead After Appendicitis Operation

Burns Hackler, a well known young man formerly of this community, died last Friday morning in Fisher, Illinois, after an operation for appendicitis. He was nineteen and a half. The body arrived home Saturday night and lay in Ray Zigler's home. He was buried Sunday after services at the U B Church in Raglesville, conducted by Rev. Ira Williams.

Odd Fellows Elect Officers At Annual Meeting

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows held its regular annual election at the hall on Wednesday night. Candidates received second and third degree work, then socialized at Freeman's restaurant with ice cream and cigars provided by the newly elected Noble Grand Huett Poindexter. Ten Plainville Troop 1 scouts led by Rev. J. W. Trowbridge hiked to Plainville starting at noon, braving rain and ditch delays. They cooked bacon and potatoes at the church, slept on its floor, then returned home tired but wiser and ready for another town call.

Fire heavily damages Owen's Restaurant on West Main Street after a gasoline stove explosion in the kitchen about 5 30. The fire department arrived quickly and contained the blaze within minutes. Smoke and water caused interior damage and insurance covers the loss.
