White Sox blank Eagles in Southside victory on Decoration Day

Williams pitched masterfully for the White Sox as they shut out the Linton Eagles at Southside on Decoration Day. Woodville held the Sox to six hits but four runs crossed the plate, including a three-run homer, in a spirited crowd game highlight of the season.

Flag Day Observance Set For June 14 In Odon

Preparations underway for Flag Day on June 14 with a main street evening program. Promoters promise an interesting holiday event featuring band music recitations by Ralph Pershing and Theo Correll, talks by Rev. Roberts, various drills, and a group rendition of Columbia The Gem of the Ocean with band. All are invited to attend and drive into Odon for the event starting about 7 p.m.

House Burns Near City. Baile Home Destroyed by Fire

The house of Andrew Baile, about five miles northeast, and its contents were a total loss after a Saturday night blaze. Mr and Mrs Baile were away at a neighbor's when the fire began. Neighbors rushed to save belongings but failed. No insurance coverage. Origin of the fire unknown and no earlier incident that day.

Strawberries Break City Size Record At Briner Home

Wm Briner a noted resident displayed Monday unusually large strawberries. Some berries measured two inches in diameter and were well shaped. variety not learned. Irvin Cobb, in The Arab film, appears as The American Tourist in a minor role adding humor to the scene.

Storm brings strong winds causing tree damage and property risk

A Monday afternoon rain storm with very strong winds toppled limbs and blew down trees around the area. No major buildings were damaged though several trees were uprooted and limbs torn, including a large maple limb near the Farmers bank that fell without breaking windows.

Local farmers report wheat stands poorly this season with only a few fields showing potential for more than half a crop. A telegram arrived yesterday afternoon announcing the death of Geo E Mathers of Nedderland Texas, brother-in-law of A M Keck.

Decoration Day Observed With Parades and Ceremonies

Decoration day was observed with crowds in town and decorated homes. Civil War veterans were driven to Walnut Hill cemetery where graves were decorated by old soldiers and boy scouts after a morning program. The Southern Indiana band led a procession to the cemetery, then a service at U B church featured Rev. W R Thom of Gosport delivering the address.

A J Boyd Dead in Township

Andrew J. Boyd longtime township resident died at his home north of the city last Sunday morning from a complication of diseases. Born in Ohio on March 2 1848 he was 68. He married Eliza Dillon in 1868 and had eight children, five surviving. After her death he married Mary Taylor and leaves two daughters and their mother. He joined the Good Hope Methodist church as a young man and lived quietly. Funeral at Good Hope Church Monday at 2 PM Rev J W Trowbridge in charge. Burial at Walnut Hill.

An idea to convert Odon into a summer resort city proposes drilling a deep well at the city park to reach a strong sulphur water vein about 6000 feet down. The park would become a prime camping site with water similar to Trinity Springs, boosting summer population and local business with a modest investment.
