The Old Settlers annual meeting under the 8 L band finished planning for the 28th gathering. Walter Danner was elected president and HOV Merrill Law Freeman was named acting secretary during Merrill's absence in Colorado. The Aug 14 15 16 event will feature new attractions and ground improvements to entertain a larger crowd, with special train arrangements via C T H S E railroad to Idle Springs to handle eastbound attendees.
A meeting of the Southern Indiana Poultry Association board at the Journal office selected Samuel P. Johnston of Fairfield Indiana unanimously from available judges to award the first annual show to be held January 20. Johnston is a leading figure in poultry nationally and his services are valued as the show dates near.
Geo York, a farmer living about four miles east of here, was arrested and taken to Washington by Sheriff Herman on no charge of assault and battery. The assault occurred some time ago amid ongoing trouble over disagreements. York was placed under $200 bond for his appearance at court Thursday.
Jen Laughlin and Howard Allman were married at noon last Sunday at the Laughlin home on East Race Street in Oden. Rev. F A Lester officiated as about thirty relatives attended. The bride, a milliner, and the groom, a Maslin machinist, planned to reside in Maslin after a 5:45 train trip to Indianapolis.
The bankrupt stock of J. A. Overton, stored in the Eepin building on East Main, was auctioned Saturday at 2 00 by order of the court. Atty Ezra Mattingly of Washington oversaw the proceedings. C B Pershing bought total stock for 2724 with 3500 valued shares and two small lots included in the sale.
In a county exam twenty eight of forty eight applicants passed the teachers test held at the courthouse. Twenty one papers were sent to Mr Folkerson from other counties, mostly Terre Haute, for grading. The geography section was especially hard, with many seasoned teachers noting it as among the toughest. Some high school applicants also took the extra exam and results await.
The county reports to the state superintendent the July 1913 school revenue apportionment totaling 50 787 75 with per pupil 273 cents. State share 18 905 52. township revenue 563 38. tuition from local taxation 27 518 44. liquor license 2 3 0. dog tax 1 500 40. Distribution by township and town numbers listed. total children 8 516, down from 9 008 last year.
A public notice from Odon Indiana announces a baseball contest between the east and west ends of town to settle a local rivalry. The game is set for Monday July 2 1913 at Scuath Side park with 15 cents admission for men and free for women.
The Graham Glass Workers beat the locals 7 to 4 in a loosely played game at Loogootee. Aca Williams started, was relieved after three, Sears finished, and Blann allowed five hits. A sensational running catch by Gantz and a sixth inning triple play by Sears highlighted the contest.
