Store of F N Sargent Destroyed By Fire At Sargent

Fire destroyed the two story frame store and merchandise of F N Sargent at Sargent about four miles northeast of Burns City. Overheated stove likely started blaze which overwhelmed efforts to control it. Loss about 8500 with 22,000 insurance. Sargent had a large stock and strong local business. rebuilding contemplated.

Teachers Make Poor Grades in County Exam

In 1912 the county teachers’ first exam yielded poor results with 13 of 53 passing for licenses. Two papers were sent to the state supervisor for review and have not yet been heard. A passing score from the state grants a license valid statewide. a county grade gives a county only. The next exam will be held Saturday February 3.

Doc Herodon Expands Roles at Gray Hotel and Local Poultry Farm

New Mail Man reports Doc Herodon as proprietor and porter of the Gray Hotel and breeder of thoroughbred poultry. He also acts as agent for the Little Wonder Lighting System and has relieved Uncle Leonard Ward who is ill at home.

School Notes Reflect Absences and Activities

Miss Edith DeMoss was absent Thursday and Friday of last week due to illness. Georgia Abraham also missed Thursday and Friday. Juniors held a class meeting, Freshmen are doing Christmas Carols, and parents are urged to send written excuses for lateness or absence. The Juniors discuss U S senators being elected by popular vote. The manual training boys finished a razor strap and will next craft a meat safe. Patrons are invited to visit the school art exhibit. Wreck On E I Injures Passengers Near Plainville

The north bound E I passenger train derailed near Plainville on Monday at 1 50 pm. Four injured men Roebling of Petersburg Small of Linton Hass of Mt Fernon and an unnamed man. Locomotive and two cars toppled into a ditch. Physicians from Washington treated the injured and the wreck was cleared by night. Conductor Turney and Engineer Burke commanded the train.

County Commencement Set For Eighth Grade Graduates

Superintendent Fulkerson and county officials decide to hold a county wide commencement for about 150 eighth grade graduates in June. The event will be in the courthouse to accommodate all attendees with Charles A. Greathouse as speaker.

Republican Second district to meet for convention in Vincennes

Republican district chairman Will Hayes issued a call for delegates and alternate delegates from the Second district to convene in Vincennes at 1 p.m. on Thursday March 28. They will select two delegates and two alternates to the Chicago Republican National Convention and nominate a presidential elector for the district to be chosen at the regular election in 192. The convention is set to include 107 delegates apportioned among the sight counties of the district.
