U B Conference Closed Sunday Night

The eighty-fifth U B conference held at this place last week closed Sunday night with many delegates and ministers leaving on trains. A merger vote between Methodist Protestant and U B denominations failed 12 to 6, pending three fourths approval and church consent. Bishop Mathews delivered the annual sermon and announced ministerial assignments for the coming year across districts.

Memorial Service and Closing Address by Rev Robin

In the afternoon a memorial service was held and in the evening the closing address was delivered by Rev. Robin. Ministers and delegates departed on the morning trains Monday.

Suit Filed Over Diseased Mare Sale

P M Laughlin of the county filed suit against Oliver A Taylor and J Henry Taylor claiming they sold him at public auction a diseased mare for 126 dollars that was worth no more than 26. He seeks 100 dollars in damages. Attorneys are Alvin Padgett of Washington and E T Laughtin of this city.

Class Reunion Brings Nine Odon High Grads Together

A Friday night reunion at Quincey Huff's home south of town gathered nine of fifteen Odon High School graduates. Refreshments of ice cream cake and lemonade were served. Attendees included Misses Marie Skemp Hillred Pershing Rena Dearmin Elsie Wadsworth Hazel Chinn and Messrs Victor Bowman Ren Boyd Chas Pate and Quincey Huff.

Sommers Family Holds Second Reunion at Clay City

The Sommers family met for a reunion at Clay City on Thursday with about 125 present for a full day of activities and a large community dinner. Attendees traveled by train or car, and Joseph Sommers traveled from Mexico to join relatives including John O Dell his wife Irene Flinn and many others from the area.

Principal Change at Local School as Trueblood Is Appointed

J Schuyler Ketchem who taught grades six and seven last year resigns to become principal at the south side school in Washington W E Trueblood of Bloomfield is chosen to fill the vacancy He formerly lived here and was connected with the local schools about two years ago.

Heavy fire losses in Indiana from May to July

Indiana fire marshal reports 2,666 fires from May 15 to July 31 causing 33,163,743 in losses. May average loss about 1,000 per fire, June 687, and July surge to 1,676 per fire with total July losses near two million. Overall average loss per fire 1,149 across the period.

Divorce Sought by Civil War Veteran After 48 Years

Samuel Jinkens of Washington files for divorce from Polly Ann Jinkens after 48 years of marriage. They wed in September 1865 and separated in 1909 when she allegedly drove him from home. He claims he provided for her and led a moral life, noting two grown children, Thomas Jefferson Jinkens and George Wesley Jinkens.

Death of John F. Daugherty in Odon

John F. Daugherty, aged 64, of Odon died at his home in south Odon after months of illness due to multiple diseases and paralysis. He was a broom maker by trade. his wife died seven years ago. Survived by son Harold, daughter Bessie, and a brother and sister. Funeral at Wealey Chapel with Rev. Trusty officiating, burial in the chapel cemetery.

The W M A of the U B church schedules a quarterly meeting on September 8 at 2 50 p m at the Old Settlers ground with song devotion readings talks duets solos and a social after dismiss.

New Educational Law Sets School Attendance Rules

The act requires children aged seven to fourteen to attend school for a term at least as long as the public school year. Those fourteen to sixteen must also attend unless in an allowed occupation. Employers may not hire under sixteen without a certificate proving age at least fourteen and fifth grade completion or equivalent schooling.

Odon Businessmen Plan New Telephone Line To Washington

Local merchants met at Odon Realty to decide buying a line from Odon to Mosquito Bend and extending via Elnora and Plainville to provide trunk service to Washington. Bell Company will maintain segments to Plainville, ensuring continued service to the county seat. Installation aims for 300 meters of new line as soon as possible to reduce delays.
