Second Chautauqua Concludes With Strong Support

The second Chautauqua in the city closed Tuesday night amid broad community praise. Music lectures and pageants featured Imperial Russian Quartette, Lorenz Anderson entertainers, Stanley Krebs, Italian Concert Band, Theressa Sheehan, Denton Crowl, and a Patriotic Day finale.

Whiteside Receives Commission as Second Lieutenant

2nd Lieutenant Whiteside Hutson Whiteside has completed the First Officers Training Camp at Indianapolis with high grades and a strong record. The popular local young man earns his commission and gains praise from many friends.

Local Draft Calls 400 Recruits for Physical Examinations

Four hundred additional registered men received notices Saturday night to report for physical examinations next Thursday through Saturday. In Daviess County the quota rose from 171 to 189 by order of Provost Marshal General Crowder, requiring eighteen more draftees. The Odon list includes residents from rural routes, with names such as Henry Harmon and John Henry Shake among others listed for mobilization.

Oden Madison Township War Effort Shown by Local Enlistments

Oden Madison Township shows its war effort with six local youths serving in the aviation department. Herbert Webster has months of service, Victor Bowman and John O Donal d departed recently, Mason Crooke and Ch Pate joined last week, Paul Sears enlisted Saturday and left for Columbus Tuesday.

The schedule shows eastbound trains to Old Settlers with departure times from Odon at 8:00 p.m. and stops at Burns City, Blankenship, Indian Springs, Cale, Mount Clive, Ailiams, and Bedford arriving at 9:05 p.m. Return trips depart Bedford at 5:40 a.m. and proceed to Coxton, Williams, Mount Olive, Cale, Indian Springs, Blankenship, Burns City, with final departure from Odon as No. 2 at 7:00 a.m.

Boys Working Reserve enlistment extended ten days

The Boys Working Reserve extends enlistment to August 22 to reach all who missed the program. Ernest Roberts, agent, urges Indiana youths to join to back soldiers at the front by taking farm and industrial roles. Ten thousand Indiana youths have already enlisted in the reserve.

Daviess County Men Named to Reserve Corps Camp

Six Daviess county men will join the Second Officers Reserve Corps with four Plainville reps Jean Enloe Raleigh Elmer Killion Roscoe T. Myers Charles Nowling. one from Elnora Frank Campbell. and Robt Woodson Tharp from Washington. Camp begins August 27 following last Saturday’s first training camp. Hanson Whiteside of Odon earned a commission as second lieutenant.

Auto Crash Near Good Hope Schoolhouse injures mother and child

A car driven by Mrs. Win Winklepleck collided with a buggy driven by Mrs. Roland Arford near the Good Hope schoolhouse on a Tuesday morning. The buggy overturned, a child was thrown to the road, and Mrs. Arford was jolted onto an embankment. the horse ran away. Both Mrs. Arford and the child suffered only minor injuries while others were shaken but unharmed.

Miss Lorena Arford Weds John Dixson in Indianapolis

Miss Lorena Fern Arford former Céon girl united in marriage with John W. Dixson of Indianapolis on August 15 at 7 30 officiated by Rev. George Kenninger. Arford daughter of Amenda Arford, a stenographer at Indianapolis Manufacturing Co. for four years. Dixson works at the Indianapolis News. They will reside in Indianapolis.

City Trustees Allow Five Claims After Meeting

The board of trustees met Tuesday evening in the Bennett Laughlin building with all members present. No business was proposed and five claims were approved totaling amounts for Indiana Power & Water Co., B D Smiley on Oiling Street Crossings, John Ice hauling, Ben Franklin hauling, and C E O'dell for marshal salary.

Bowman Joins Army Medical Department as First Lieutenant

Dr. I. E. Bowman of this city enlists in the Army medical department and is expected to be called to service within weeks. He will receive his commission as a first lieutenant within a few days.

Mrs H H Crooke hosted a Wednesday afternoon Thimble club gathering with special guests five Red Cross Unit ladies from Washington. Through Mrs E A Hubbard of Indiana the club plans a mass meeting next week to organize a Red Cross auxiliary in Linton with Deal's relatives visiting.
