Boys Working Reserve Meeting Urges Enlistment of 16 to 21 Year Olds

An open air gathering in Madison Wednesday promoted the Working Reserve for boys ages 16 to 21 not for military service but to boost food production and replace workers drafted from factories and farms. Rev Ernest Roberts aids enrollment and Joe Allen of Washington described the program.

Daviess County Teachers Institute Opens at Washington High

The fifty seventh annual session begins Monday at the new Washington high school. Instructors include Jesse H White Pittsburg Louis C Karpinski Ann Arbor Michigan and Thomas L Gibson Baltimore. The program runs through Friday with local talents contributing musically. This will be A O Fulkersons last term as county superintendent before James E Gillev takes over August 16.

Chautauqua Opens Today With Imperial Russian Quartette

Work crews set up the big tent at Wilson lots in west Odon after site changes. The program begins at 2 5 with the Imperial Russian Quartette in a performance featuring vocal and instrumental music. A large crowd is expected.

Death of Mrs. Dellah James in local city

Mrs. Dellah James aged resident died after illness. Born in Daviess County March 16, she was a daughter of Horace and Elizabeth Wilkey. Widow of John James, she leaves two daughters Mrs. Hettie Parris and Mrs. Rebecca J. Marshall. Funeral at Concord church with Rev J. W. Trowbridge officiating. Burial in nearby cemetery.

Young man dies amid conscription fears in Ottawa

Doings trace a 28 year old man from the community who took his own life rather than face conscription. He was to marry a prominent local woman and his death prompted telegrams to his sister Mrs Huette Poindexter and brother Dennis. The body rested at a Ottawa area cemetery after services at his home.

Dislocated Shoulder After Surrey Accident

Ralph Richardson was injured Monday when a two seated surrey collided with three men near Marsh. In a scuffle he dodged a blow, his leg caught in the front wheel, and the wheels passed over him. Dr. Anderson reset a dislocated left shoulder after anesthesia.

County draft board sets medical exam dates and quota plan

The county exemption board routes August 20 21 and 22 as tentative exam dates for the 400 registrants. They aim to complete a 171 man quota and add ten percent for rejections at mobilization. A first exam group on Saturday saw 342 ordered and 321 comply. About sixty percent seek exemption and twenty percent fail physicals. Registrants should report address changes promptly. Tommey Smiley of Van Buren township and Miss Opal Stewart of Elmore township wed Sunday evening at Rev. Thompson’s home in Plainville. Witnesses were Standley Hastings and Nellie Pruett. The ceremony and details reflect local community life and wartime enlistment efforts led by E. Roberts as Enrollment Agent Trueman Flint noted as first to enlist.

At the regular troop meeting the Colón Troop Boy Scouts of America presented Sgt Outmaster Roberts with a gold ring as a gift from the troop. The ring is a solid old signet engraved with the Boy Scout emblem.
