Odon High School Commencement Draws Large Crowd

Last evening at the Christian church the Odon High School senior class received diplomas marking four years of study. Dr. Horace Ellis delivered the address as the program featured the high school chorus and Girls Glee club, with music by Miss Ida Hanna and Miss Pickett.

County Leads Madison in Third Liberty Subscriptions

Daviess county residents push Third Liberty loan past 500000 with women’s group totaling 185000 and Madison township likely reaching at least 60000. Boy scouts and follow up work expected to raise more as campaigns continue. Steele among earliest to exceed quota.

Red Cross Drive Opens May 20 For County Effort

J. G. Allen is named county chairman for the next Red Cross drive set to start May 20 and end May 27. The national goal is $100 million with the county quota expected near prior drive levels between eight and nine thousand dollars. Allen plans to reuse the successful Third Liberty Bond campaign organization and outlines full details arriving in a few days.

Arvin resigns as manager to join Eskridge Allen Stores in Washington

Jesse Arvin, manager of the M. E Pickett store, resigns to relocate to Washington to work with Eskridge Allen Stores. Edn Pershing becomes the new manager, coming from Barkiers Department Store where he served as a salesman and executive. Graduation presents offered by M. B. Ulrich & Co.

Rain Drives Growth as Farmers Welcome Tuesday Storm

A heavy rain started after midnight Tuesday and persisted until daybreak, revitalizing crops and vegetables in need of moisture. An unusually strong electrical display accompanied the precipitation, bringing optimism to growers about the coming season.

Plainville High School Graduation Honors Seven Graduates

Seven graduates received diplomas at Plainville High School commencement. Five were boys and two were girls, unusual for the district. Superintendent Arterburo presided. Rev. W. Darby of Washington gave the address, with music by the Dilliard Orchestra of Washington.

Brakeman Clings to Rods for Narrow Seymour Escape

Everett Bough of Terre Haute former city resident and Southeastern railroad brakeman escaped death in Seymour by clinging to a truss rod beneath a box car after being knocked from the top mid switching. He held on as the car moved seven car lengths before stopping suffering only facial and head bruises.

Stalcup Named Silo Leader for Daviess County

Steve Stalcup of Elnora is appointed silo leader for Daviess County and summoned to a state silo conference in Indianapolis on April 25. The Indiana Committee on Food Production and Conservation will outline the silo drive with cooperation from the Better Farming Association, County Agent, Food Committee, and County Council of Defense.

Nurse Lettie Wadsworth Joins War Service Transit

Miss Lettie Wadsworth, once part of this community and now a trained nurse, is en route to France for war service. Letters received last week described the start of her journey and assignment aloft.
