Tax assessor Curtis Winn, 73, is indicted on misapplication of fiduciary property in a case that also involves Beverly Hudson and seeks civil action to remove him from office. Officials say $10,000 to $50,000 may have been siphoned. Winn contests the charges and plans to fight them.
Beverly Hudson, former Ector County Tax Assessor-Collector employee, turned herself in on two second-degree felony charges of official misconduct and misapplication of fiduciary property. Indictments were issued by the county grand jury along with Curtis Winn on a related charge. Hudson bonds set at 5,000 each. potential penalties include 2 to 20 years in prison and up to 10,000 fines per count. Hudson’s attorney said a defense is being prepared.
Auditors and investigators from the Ector County DA office state comptroller and Texas Rangers pursued a nine month inquiry into possible embezzlement of thousands of dollars from motor vehicle registration fees. Three indictments were returned including Curtis Winn and Beverly Hudson, a former clerk, as the grand jury wrapped up proceedings.
Thirteen month-old Brandon Hall, the world's youngest double liver transplant recipient, died of cardiac arrest at 3:30 a.m. at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis. His mother Billie Hall of Walnut Mississippi spoke after the loss, and the family donated his corneas to an eye bank with other organ donations considered but deemed unusable due to his poor health. Brandon had been on a respirator nearly a month and doctors had warned his chances were slim since May 2.
The University of Texas System Board of Regents planned to select a new president this afternoon after interviewing four finalists, including Robert L. Jones, Duane M. Leach, and Robert H. Maier, with others and acting President Donald Rippey not among finalists.
