Big Bend hospital directors take on new duties in county taxing district

Brewster County commissioners created a hospital taxing district and appointed the existing Big Bend Memorial Hospital directors to lead the new board. The directors will decide whether to seek voter approval for the district, which would tax at up to 20 cents per $100 of property value. If approved, the board serves until elected officials take over. The move aims to fund capital needs after the hospital’s 1984 financial struggles, though it has broken even since October. Also approved was a one year renewal with West Texas Ambulance Service at $900 monthly, with Alpine paying $2,000 monthly for its share.
