Democrats oppose GOP prescription drug plan in Medicare Rx 2000 bill
Democrats say the Medical Rx 2000 bill by Rep. Bill Thomas would not guarantee coverage or keep costs down for seniors and could limit pharmacy and drug choices. Rep. Richard Burr defends a bipartisan, voluntary, fully integrated drug benefit with a public-private plan for 38 million beneficiaries.

Consumer confidence falls in June
Americans grew more concerned about the direction of the U.S. economy in June as rising fuel costs and higher interest rates eroded optimism. The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index slipped to 138.8 in June from 144.7 in May, below analysts’ forecasts but near record highs. The report notes consumers see weaker prospects for the economy while still maintaining spending, with a strong labor market and ongoing Fed policy scrutiny.
