UTPB Wins 1.5 Million Grant For Bilingual Education
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin received a 1.5 million dollar U.S. Department of Education grant to fund scholarships for about 43 current and prospective bilingual teachers each year for five years. An informational meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the UTPB Student Lounge. The Career Ladder Grant helps aides and substitute teachers advance into teaching with options to pursue counseling or administration and allows study at Odessa College or Midland College for flexibility.

Archbishop Flores Freed After NineHour Hostage Ordeal
Archbishop Patrick Flores was released after a hostage crisis at the San Antonio chancery. A man held Flores for about nine hours with a grenade threat and also took his secretary Myrtle Sanchez before she was freed.
