Identity mix up haunts two Michigan towns after crash
Laura VanRyn 22 of Caledonia died in a April 26 Indiana crash that killed four Taylor University students and a staff member. A misidentification with Whitney Cerak delayed recognition for five weeks, causing Cerak to be treated as dead and VanRyn as alive. Coroner Ron Mowery cited missed visual confirmation and notes that school staff helped tag bodies at the scene while a deputy coroner advised against viewing.

Experts warn trauma distorts perception in mix up of crash victims
