Dollar coin fails to catch on despite massive ad blitz
Washington AP reports nearly two thirds of Americans oppose replacing the dollar bill with a coin though many would favor the switch if it saved taxpayers money. A three year 67.1 million marketing campaign by the Mint yielded limited public uptake with 70 percent aware of the coin but only 5 percent having used one and under 2 percent at machines or tolls. The GAO Gallup survey notes a history of poor adoption similar to the Anthony silver dollar from 1979 to 1981.
