Local churches in Newark Nutley and nearby towns join a national campaign urging every resident to attend church on Sunday February 15, choosing morning or evening services. The effort, begun in Joliet and spreading coast to coast, aims to revive regular churchgoing and stress the churchs community role.
Yesterday at the Fortnightly Club bridge and euchre were played. Hostesses at auction tables included Mesdames Colwell Carr Miller Wallace Saunders and Miss Chandler. high scores went to Mesdames Colwell Heller Daly and the Misses Thom ONeil and Kirkeby. Bridge hostesses were Mesdames EB Clark Fox Walker Stager Hayden. bridge winners were Mesdames Rodman Donnelly Dahlberg Saunders J F Carx and Lee. Euchre hostesses were Mesdames Hanta Epworth Diffe Fairbrother LaForge Verg Slavik Reiger Ayers. euchre winners were Mesdames Taylor Pingree Haschek Sattler Fairbrother Roe Festus Mustoe Joralemon and Kirkeby.
Stars and Stripes Council Daughters of Liberty installed officers at a Masonic Hall meeting led by Deputy Stout of Newark. New officers include Councillor Mrs. George Stillwell and others, with a pay-as-you-enter dance planned for February 19 in the lodge room.
A plan to convert the Morris Canal into a boulevard and parkway gains support across New Jersey. Advocates seek to preserve the canal while closing sections where useful, funding the project by selling adjoining land. The canal’s beauty along banks and the old tow-path attract public interest as the Legislature contemplates abandonment and highway funding.

The Board of Education presents a free lecture "A Trip Abroad and Economy of Travel" by Charles Rollinson a New York artist. It covers planning a European itinerary budgeting steamer stateroom luggage hotels and travel classes with lantern slides. It will be at 8 15 pm Friday February 18 with seating limited for youths under sixteen unless accompanied by adults.
At New Haven Yale prom hosts included Miss Marie Stewart Miss Edith Bouvier and Mrs Roger Minturm with John V Bouvier 3d H J MacFarland and Horace Allen as guests for the Yale Prom.
Billy Bolger hosted a party for about thirty young friends last Saturday at his parents home on Whitford Avenue to celebrate his seventh birthday.
Two men broke into C R Bedell’s grocery on Franklin Avenue late Thursday. Neighbors chased them. one was captured after a hedge fall near Dr. Farrington’s lawn. The suspect, calling himself Louis Snyder, was arrested after fleeing through the cellar and out the front. Eighty cents from the cash register was the only item missing.
Five new street letter boxes have been erected at Nutley avenue and Tennis place, Satterthwaite avenue and North road, Cantre street and Union avenue, Franklin avenue and Harrison street, and Vreeland avenue and Sylvan place. There will be no night collection from the latter two.
More than 300 people gathered for the pre Lenten euchre party organized by the St Marys Church societies under Rev William L Cunningham. Walter Fettbrother and Francis McCabe led the event with assistance from Miss Edith McGrath Mary Miller Bessie Hochstrasser and Catherine Freeman. High scores were posted by Mrs Gustave Leutigens Chester Westlake Esther Martin John Reynolds and others including several named families. A brief medical ad promotes Himer Amend’s 2661 claimed to relieve rheumatic symptoms via reliable druggists.
Objections to Plan A for a precinct bounded by Passaic avenue Grant avenue Centre street and east to the Passaic river were heard after the Board of Commissioners created a drainage district. A storm drain project to water Barley Brook is set to cost about $6 000 with about fifty property owners signing the petition supporting the plan. February 16 was fixed for hearing objections.
An attempted daylight hold-up near Franklin Avenue and Centre Street at 10:30 a.m. ended when neighbors shouted for help and the assailants fled into the woods before Patrolman George Pratt arrived. The victims were Frank Ricco of Essex Street and the would‑be robbers brandished guns during the incident.
Rev. Alfonzo de Santola of the Church of the Holy Family in Harrison Street lodged a police complaint about an impostor posing as the church's representative to solicit funds in Nutley and Belleville. The man, tall and well dressed with black hair and eyes, has appeared for three years in clerical garb at several streets, taking small sums from residents. Father de Santola offered a five dollar reward for the arrest.
At the Fortnightly Club on Thursday night a Ladies' Night featured seven bridge tables while bowling alleys and a dance area were active. About forty attendees participated with high score winners including Mrs. Willis Saunders Edward H. Yerg and Mrs. Abijah C. Fox.
New retail store Dorothy's Little French Shop plans to open in the Stirratt building Franklin avenue this morning. It will specialize in women's wear and fashionable novelties aimed at local shoppers.
A representative Nutley committee from local lodges and societies met at St Pauls Church to approve a townwide celebration focused on Nutley progress. The plan aims to honor the library, park, station and other improvements possibly tying in Essex County Park or the Free Public Library opening.
The Elka entertainment and house committees met Monday night to launch an individuality contest among members. Each man will host at the clubrooms once weekly, and the host with the most engaging evening and highest attendance will win a prize in spring. The first event, a Dutch supper, is set for next Saturday night, with Ambrose and Wildey leading the committee.
Miss Dorothy Gorman of Prospect street hosted a luncheon last Saturday attended by eight guests including Eleanor Dale Marjory Date and Mary Lamb.
