Nutley officials confront goats roaming East Nutley development from St Mary's place to Passaic avenue. An ordinance targets goats and other livestock, with a $10 penalty per offense. Nutley Improvement Society and residents push for enforcement as repeated attempts to curb the nuisance fail.
Free Public Library committees decide against new building or appropriation discussions for now. They plan to consolidate with Nutley and Park School to house books in a larger room while pursuing annual tax support. The Triangle Club met in the basement of St. Pauls Congregational Church to perfect the organization and elected John H Feltus as president Albert Ayers as vice president Harold Osborne as secretary and Frederick Dittig as treasurer.
Since a town map showed breeding sites a week ago the local Board of Health has intensified weedings against the skeeter pest. Landowners with large breeding spots have been asked to help. the worst areas are Bloomfield avenue and the Erie Railroad tracks. Professor John B. Smith of New Brunswick will visit Nutley late this month to lecture in Town Hall Auditorium.
A class of children will be confirmed this afternoon at Grace Church by Bishop Lines of the Newark Diocese. Tomorrow morning a communion service will be held at 7 o'clock, with morning service and communion at 11 o'clock, followed by the children's Sunday School festival at 3 36 o'clock.
Stars and Stripes Council hosts a reception and dance at Town Hall on Easter Monday night. The organizing committee includes Mrs Wright Sutcliffe as chair, with Mrs Ellen Speer Miss Jessie Perkins Mia Mary Wilste G K Speer Robert Part and Joseph Baum guiding arrangements. A large attendance is expected.
Freeholder John Howe will present to the Board of Freeholders a petition from Nutley residents seeking county bridges over streams and railroad tracks in the Prospect street extension from High street to Kingsland road. A resolution backing the petition was adopted at a Nutley Town Council special meeting held Saturday.
A municipal project in Nutley combines a new wooden call box telephone system with the existing Fire Alarm network to cut wiring costs. Seven boxes plus one at headquarters will relay patrols to headquarters every half hour, with a three volt line through a Gamewell system.
Mrs Thomas Nichols of Brookfield Avenue hosted the Sans Gene Card Club on Wednesday. Prizes included a Renaissance centerpiece won by Miss Emma Beatus and a set of silver fruit knives awarded to Mrs Cornelius Roe. Guests present were Mrs Edward Verg Mrs H N Rodman Mrs C M Saunders Miss Ethel Thom Miss Beatus and Mrs T H Sterling.
A man named August Bader from Windsor robbed and assaulted his sister in law Mrs Rudolph Bader at their home near East Passaic avenue and Kingsland street. He tied her, dragged her to the cellar, fled in a pair of overalls after being interrupted, leaving a $20 bill. Mrs Bader, badly cut and shocked, was treated by a doctor. Local chancemen and a posse chased possible leads in the area.
Abram R. Taylor and Dr. Thomas E. Satterthwaite spoke at Guthrie's Hall on Tuesday night about how Second and Third Ward Associations aid town governance. They said disputes drop when associations discuss issues before council action, giving councils less to puzzle over and more weight to public backing. The nominating committee proposed officers and directors for the coming term, naming Walton, Gilmore, Satterthwaite, Cunningham, White, New, Conkling, Johnston and others for multi-year posts.
Churches vie with elegant Easter music as Vincent Church hosts a cantata led by organist Joseph and soprano Mrs. Hugh Eagleson. Soloists include E.W. Owen tenor and C. A. Smith bass with a forty-voice choir. The program features Mass sections, anthems, and classical choruses under H. L. Fenton.
A brief court session last night dealt with Lut Doremus of 2nd Avenue Passaic. He was fined 10 dollars for placing advertising signs and for allegedly committing a public nuisance related to a proposed building on East Passaic Avenue. The recorder noted weather dampened proceedings.
A progressive bridge event is planned by the Fortnightly Club for April 28. The follow up committee is in charge with Mrs. James Hick and Mrs. William Fox among organizers. Other listed members include Mrs. R. Thomas Nichols Mrs. J. P. Hunting and Miss Emma Beatua.
