Washington Haig a former four star general who resigned to join the White House becomes a uniformed officer again with no public ceremony or farewell. He had been the closest aide to the President within the Oval Office during his tenure.
President Antonio de Spinola stepped down today, citing anarchy endangering Portugal with political and economic chaos. The move is seen as a victory for the Communist led left, with Gen Francisco Costa Gomes named to succeed him as a political moderate and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff.
