Local debate centers on whether to sign the budget for federal poverty funds. Mrs. Ford leads Erie Huron Community Action and opposes a funds request until the survey shows where poverty exists and what programs are needed.
Albert G. Probst ends a 44 year service with the Norwalk Fire Department today. He joined as a 1922 volunteer butcher, became full time in 1936, and served as driver for the number one truck since 1947. He plans to stop working, enjoy church choir and rose gardening at home on 13 Hickory St.
Juvenile Court Judge Russell T. Antrim heard 15 youths aged 14 to 17, plus several 18-year-olds, tied to drinking in parked cars. Cases spanned five incidents with beer supplied by older youths. One 17-year-old from Monroeville was found delinquent on drunken driving and related charges after a high speed chase.
Huron County commissioners support the Huron County Community Action Commission in seeking an analysis of the anti poverty program survey before applying for more funds. They refused to sign a report or a $56 680 budget until the analysis is completed.
A homecoming banquet for U S Senator Stephen M Young planned by the Huron County Democratic Central and Executive Committee has been postponed. The Oct 1 event will be rescheduled after the new year as Young is in the Far East on assignment by Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Democratic Headquarters open Oct 15 at 10 1/2 Whittlesey Ave. Loretta Timmerman is named to succeed Brian Schaffer in Norwalk 4 A. Eileen Pheffier will replace Edward Ganz in Fitchville Township. Russell Worcester will succeed Marlene Andress in Greenfield Township.
A Norwalk woman, Lorene Barry, 20, of 64 1/2 Grover Street, fell from her husband Eddie Barry's car on Route 250 north of Milan. She was admitted to Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital with multiple bruises and is confined for observation. condition described as fairly good.
Norwalk salesman Art McCarty was named Huron County Chairman of Ohioans for Rhodes a drive to re elect Governor James A Rhodes.
City Manager Keith Armstrong announced Willard will receive a federal grant of $15,299 toward the city's comprehensive master plan. The application was filed in February 1966 with Clark Turner and Associates handling the process.
An unseasonable tornado touched down in Garfield Heights Warrensville Heights and North Randall causing extensive damage. Six homes were destroyed and 27 damaged as 30 000 to 40 000 utilities were disrupted. Two sisters were blown from a home while a brother alerted neighbors. The storm also dropped hail across Rocky River and Lakewood.
City Service Director Morley Price pledges correction of raw sewage discharge from the Norwalk municipal light plant into Norwalk Creek by year end. He says restrooms have been relocated and sewer lines will connect to a new sanitary sewer soon, acknowledging past improper discharge.
Wesley Braden, 18, of Wakeman, was cited for hit and run after losing control on Route 61 east of Norwalk. His car tore out nine guard rail posts and 60 feet of fence before he left the scene and later reported to the patrol post.
Norwalk moves to upgrade sewage facilities after six years of study by Finkbeiner Pettis and Strout of Toledo. Officials choose expansion of the existing plant to meet federal standards ahead of a 30 year schedule.
