Oscar Garcia, serving 90 days for a drug violation, was granted probation and later hired as a jail janitor using federal funds at Huron County Jail. The move arose after discussions among Garcia’s lawyer Henry E. Young, Sheriff John Borgia, and Judge Robert W. Smith.
Unemployment in Huron County falls from 9.0 to 8.2 percent as August payroll adds 320 jobs and the labor force grows by 215 to 25 528. Erie County shows 616 more jobs but a 440 decline in labor force, with an 8.4? unemployment rate. Adams and Scioto counties remain highest at 15.2 percent.
Dale Harris nineteen fled New London Police Chief Norman Snyder during questioning in a village parking lot. He was arrested by state patrol for reckless operation after driving into a ditch. Harris remains in Huron County Jail on a 375 dollar bond. Police plan to charge him with excessive noise and resisting arrest in addition to theft.
A benefit chicken barbecue and dance for Wakeman policeman Clarence Bud Whitney is set for Oct 11 at St Marys Hall. Whitney was shot in the leg July 20 during a suspected robbery at Wakemans Laund Dri Mat. Three men were arrested. Tickets cost 7.50 and are sold at Wakeman Bank Jan s Barber Shop and the Gerber Funeral Home.
Dan Stewart hauled furniture from Elyria to Norwalk when a mattress in the pickup back caught fire, likely from a cigarette. The mattress and bedsprings were destroyed and the mirror, nightstand, and truck bed damaged. County figures planned a Columbus trip for a land use meeting.
