Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako arrive in Anchorage for a two week trip as the first reigning Japanese monarch to visit the United States. The visit draws cheers from well wishers during the start of the historic tour.
Nine year old Terrence Benn died on arrival at St. Luke's Hospital after fumes felled five other household members on the southeast side. Sisters Tanya Benn six and Tressa Benn thirty, and Ralph Buttram thirty two were in fair condition at St. Luke's, as Irma Buttram thirty two and Darlene Benn eighteen were in fair condition at Marymount Hospital. Neighbor Howard Bryan found the unconscious family at 12 30 p.m. and helped others outside.
Chicago reports that NSC spokesman E A Whithurst said tire spray products can temporarily improve traction on ice and snow. He noted that the boost could reach as much as 100 percent, aiding winter driving.
Treasury Secretary William Simon told the Senate Appropriations Committee that publicity around two Ford assassination attempts has tripled threats to the president. He said 320 threats occurred in the first 20 days of September, far above the usual 100 to 110, blaming publicity for worsening the situation.

Two cars collided head on on a narrow Ridge Road bridge near North Fairfield Monday afternoon. One vehicle caught fire and was gutted. both cars were demolished. All three occupants avoided serious injuries and were treated and released. Koch 18, and Hesss were involved. Fire Department extinguished the blaze. No citation issued. A separate Monday night crash on Townline Road south of New London injured a motorcyclist and passenger, Larry Knudsen 22 and Michael Midolo 20, who were treated at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital.
The Board of Zoning Appeals convenes at 7 30 tonight in city council chambers to review pending cases and hear public input.
Charles R. Perkins aged 57 died from intra abdominal hemorrhage after his car struck a stalled vehicle on U S 250 south of Fitchville. Richard J. Dungjen Paula Dungjen and their son were in the parked car. Perkins' injuries proved fatal at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital. Services set for 2 p m Friday at Eastman Funeral Home with military honors.
Norwalk Board of Education candidate Dorothy Delianides told Rotary Club members that the school administration controls interviews and hires, with the board approving in minutes. She criticized teacher turnover at the high school and questioned Superintendent Albion V. Gotaas being treated as only a symbol while students lack leadership and familiarity.
Support for Grace Reeves grows as relatives of Scott Smith, eight, who suffocated in a grain bin, contribute to the fund. Fund director Douglas Colvin reports the total reached 1732. Mrs Reeves is near kidney failure but delayed treatment due to cost. She remains at Cleveland Clinic described as satisfactory with a fair night.
