Nearly an inch of rain fell by noon in Norwalk after a shower that started around 9 p.m. Monday. The last heavy rain was Sept. 3 when 1.5 inches fell. Seven year old Karen Blymyer walked to Maplehurst School wearing a plastic bag to stay dry.
Washington reports August housing starts at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,057,009, down from July and well below August 1965 levels. Senator Young argues a 1 percent mortgage rate hike costs a family about 4,700, urging White House to push Congress to curb high rates. CBS cancels Psycho airing following Valerie Percy murder in Kenilworth, prompting concern over violent content.
The United States admits its warplanes may have briefly violated Chinese air space on September 9 and 17 during battles with MIG jets. State Department spokesman says no attack on a Chinese village occurred and shells from dogfights may have landed on Chinese soil.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a group of Negro students moved toward schools in Grenada Mississippi as integration sparked a white mob frenzy last week.

A car hit a pole at Gallup and Milan Avenues trapping two women who were on their way to work at Green Tree Inn. Hot wires sparked as a transformer fell. power remained off for over three hours while police directed passengers to stay put. Both women and items nearby sustained damage. driver Chrystal I. Lamphere and Eleanora Cesara were treated and released.
Norwalk school officials cancelled a special class for hearing impaired children after only about five or six students could be enrolled. Superintendent Corbin cited reluctance from districts and parents, a lack of a local speech therapist, and funding limits as reasons for ending the program despite prior board approval.
John Jacob Kaisaner pleaded no contest to driving under the influence after a jury was impaneled in Huron County Common Pleas Court. He originally faced trial, changed to no contest, and received a $100 fine, three days in jail, and court costs. Prosecutor was Robert F. Thornton for the City of Willard.
At Erie Carroll Road crossing near Port Clinton two small brothers Kevin Petersen age 3 and Mark Petersen age 2 died when their car was struck by a New York Central train. Their mother Margaret Erton 36 suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized after the collision. The train was driven by Bertram Osgood 44 of Toledo.
A 17 year old New London boy faces delinquency charges in juvenile court over a Route 250 crash that killed 16 year old Linda Wharton of Ashland Ohio. The car carried four others and a head on collision injured three teens. Police say the teens had attended a beer party prior to the crash and additional youths face delinquency cases in October.
