Pope Paul VI issued a dramatic encyclical appealing for an end to the Vietnam conflict before it is too late. He urged worldwide prayer for peace during October and called on leaders to use all means to prevent further spread of the war.
Cleveland Common Pleas Court Judge Francis J. Talty, 46, was assigned to preside over the anticipated October 18 murder trial of Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard. Talty called the assignment an awesome responsibility amid ongoing venue considerations for the 1954 slaying case.
A fiery meteor traced a 1000 mile arc from Ontario New York to Missouri on Saturday night. Observers across Ontario New York New Jersey Maryland Pennsylvania West Virginia Michigan Indiana Illinois Wisconsin Tennessee Kentucky and Missouri reported the sighting. In Washington a UPI report notes Democratic leaders believe Kennedy has little chance to challenge Johnson in 1968.

Former White House speechwriter Richard N. Goodwin charged that the Johnson and Kennedy administrations sometimes deceived Americans about U S policy in Viet Nam. He said some statements were deliberate lies and distortions while others were sincere, in a speech before ADA officials.
An 18 year old Berlin Heights girl, Karen Fleming, remained in fair condition at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital after falling from the back of an open bed truck on Rt. 60 near Wakeman Sunday afternoon. She sustained head injuries and facial cuts while riding atop furniture loaded in the truck driven by Thomas D. Domlinson, 18, of Wakeman. A gust of wind apparently caused the load to shift and throw her to the ground.
A 27 year old resident of the Stanley Wright Home for retarded children died Sunday morning at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital from burns suffered while burning trash at the home last week. William Carmichel born New Brunswick N J had lived at the home 19 years. He is survived by his parents and sister Betty Jean. Funeral services will be private Tuesday at Hinman funeral Home with Rev Osborne Hoover officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery Berlin Heights.
Byron W. Bisbee a 45 year old from Trotwood Ohio drowns Sunday in Sandusky Bay during a fishing trip with companion Jack Crume 58. They had been drinking aboard a 26 foot cruiser from Green's Marina Port Clinton. Bisbee's body was found by skin divers at about 2 30 p m and an autopsy will be done.
Two youths aged 15 and 17 were sentenced by Juvenile Court Judge Russell T. Antrim to indefinite terms at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield. One offender is from Willard and the other from Shiloh, found delinquent for their roles in break ins.
About 26 000 main fairgoers and an estimated 56 000 total attendees enjoyed four days of exhibits rides and contests. Fair President Tony Meyer called it the most successful fair in years aided by ideal weather. A large grandstand crowd watched a grand equestrian revue featuring over 300 ponies and horses, described as the largest show of its kind at the fairgrounds. The event began at 6 pm and extended past 2 am after the final class.
