Israeli warplanes struck Egyptian ground forces along the Suez Canal on a cease fire anniversary, with both sides confirming overflight of the east bank. Egypt denied firing on the Israeli planes while Israel cited returning anti-aircraft fire.
Graig Nettles of Cleveland hit his 26th homer as the Yankees split a doubleheader with New York. His defense produced a new major league record for third basemen with 51 double plays, surpassing Harland Clift's 34-year-old mark.
In Weston Illinois an 118 car freight train derailed releasing naphtha tank car fire. About 150 residents fled as seven fire departments battled the blaze to prevent spread to six petroleum cars and a leaking alcohol tanker.
Sen George S McGovern refused to change his statement that Communist delegates at the Paris peace talks told him American POWs would be freed if the U S set a withdrawal date from Vietnam by December 31 The Communists issued a public repudiation of McGovern s version and insisted their seven point peace proposal including a demand for South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu s replacement be considered in full
Gov. John J. Gilligan signed two motor vehicle bills including one to require reflectorized license plates on Ohio vehicles starting in 1973. He called it a simple step to cut highway deaths as rear-end collisions at night decline with reflective plates. The extra annual cost to motorists is 50 cents to cover production.
