Robert Strimpfel Jr withdrew as a Democratic candidate for Norwalk councilman at large after moving outside city limits. The slate for council at large now lists Pflieger and Peat for Democrats while Hakes Liedorff and Saladin Jr. remain for Republicans. Three council seats are to be filled.
James E. Lehman 52 of Bedford was arrested by the Huron County Sheriff after a Reflector story linked him to a bad check at Southside Bait Store. He pleaded guilty in common pleas court and was ordered to restitution and costs, then released.
The Nastodian family perished when a car collided with a Norfolk and Western train on Laylin Road Thursday night. Kimberly Ann Nastodian died Sunday in Elyria Memorial Hospital after head injuries. her parents John Nastodian and Carol Nastodian were pronounced dead at the scene and hospital respectively. Funeral services were set for the First Methodist Church with Heaston Hile Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Forty-three buyers paid over $27000 for 4-H feeder stock at the Huron County Junior Fair Sale. Steers averaged $31.61 per cwt, sheep $28.41, lambs $24.16. Hogs totalled $6814.38, lambs $1737.23, steers $18570.88. Junior exhibitors received $27122.49. Grand and reserve champions earned top prices for lambs and steers, with local buyers including Mead Motor Co and Schild's IGA Foodliner.
A tourist train derailed on Mt Washington in New Hampshire killing eight people and injuring Gov. John W. King. The one car toppled into a 600 foot ravine after a switch allegedly released prematurely. Four victims were children.
Dayton district: white detective Robert S. Collier charged with first degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Negro civil rights leader Robert Elwood Barbee, 41, who was shot in the back twice after being approached by officers near a downtown restaurant. Collier held for grand jury proceedings. D. L. Michael present.
Norwalk hosted 36 Civil Air Patrol cadets for a weekend training at Norwalk Airport. The group from CAP Group Eleven’s six squadrons, including both boys and girls from as far as Cleveland, practiced a simulated search for a missing aircraft under Maj. Edward Egan’s guidance.
Vincent Perez Picazo faces stabbing with intent to wound in an incident at the Stokely Van-Camp migrant workers camp. Norwalk police said Lucio Garcia 22 was stabbed in the neck with a table knife. Picazo arrested and jailed. Garcia listed as fairly good at hospital. Two men jailed on intoxication charges as possible witnesses.
Publicity director Paul Burns announced 59 800 paid admissions over four days plus many free attendees underscoring a record fair. The event featured the largest draft horse display, 4 H projects, saddle horses, and a doubled school art show with strong night crowd appeal.
