Graham Greene revealed in an autobiography that at 19 he played Russian roulette and nearly threw himself under a subway train. He says the urge to die by action was strong in his teenage years.

Automobile industry officials testified before Congress that removing the 7 per cent auto tax would lower car prices by 125 to 300 dollars and reduce used car prices as well. They urged repeal of excise taxes on light trucks as part of President Nixon's prosperity plan. The discussion touched on potential accessories becoming optional and predicted broader economic effects.
Britain France and West Germany warned the United States that a 10 percent import surcharge could trigger a world trade war if kept. The Group of Ten members urged rescinding the tariff and currency revaluation, amid a dollar crisis and mixed market signals.

Washington UPI reports former Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel described his firing by President Nixon as a freeing moment as he left the administration last fall. He said he felt 14 feet tall and totally free.
Norwalk's Jack Gerken, 45, was elected president of the National Association of Furniture Manufacturers at its Boston convention. He is among the youngest to hold the post and is the second Gerken to lead the group after his father J. Raymond Gerken.
Norwalk City Hall moves to overhaul finances and administration by December 15 under Haskins and Sells. A deputy treasurer and office manager will centralize money handling and clerical services, with no net job increases and possible staff reductions. The plan unfolds as George T. Saxton Associates begins utility billing changes in November.
