Liberia's Angie Brooks, assistant secretary of state, will become the second woman and third African to preside over the United Nations General Assembly when the session opens Tuesday. She has served as Liberia’s U.N. delegate for 15 years.
Ohio enacts statutes holding parents liable for damages caused by children under 18. The law allows recovery from parents without a prior delinquency finding and applies to damages to persons or property, expanding estate recoveries for assaults by juveniles.
In Renton Washington attorney Alva C Long traveled to Longacres Racetrack on Sunday with intent to lose 300 in cash and sue the state for illegal gambling. Instead Long won 1845 at the track, shifting plans under an 1881 statute drafted to force a legal challenge.
Dr. Herbert L. Ley Jr., administrator of the FDA, testified at a congressional hearing about a flight meal he described as rancid roast beef with a putrid odor. He did not name the airline but said he filed a complaint after the experience.
Radio preacher Carl McIntire attempted to read his White Manifesto at Riverside Church where James Forman first gained attention for demanding 500 million dollars for blacks from American churches. Organ music drowned his speech as Rev. Ernest T. Campbell urged him to leave.

In Middletown Ohio seven people including six children died when a two story frame house in Franklin burned early today. Rescued mother Joyce Neal 36 is in serious condition. Bertha Hillard 27 Franklin and six Neals ages 10 to 15 months perished from smoke and heat inhalation. The fire started in a sofa and fed by wallpaper. Neal was away at the time.
In Toronto Yoko Ono faced boos and whistles during a two song solo set at a rock revival. She performed after joining John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band with guests including Eric Clapton and Tony Jo White. Lennon also sang six songs, including Blue Suede Shoes and Cold Turkey.
Chief Warrant Officer William O'Dell arrives home with his wife Liz and nine month old son John Henry after a year in Vietnam. The helicopter pilot, formerly at Kon Tum, wakes supporters at Hopkins Airport with a welcome home sign. He plans about 30 days leave before duty as an instructor pilot in Fort Rutger Albania.
Clyde Junior Mullins, 22, of Norwalk, led officers on a 120 mph chase from East Main Street to Bellamy Road before being apprehended at his home Saturday morning. Patrolman John Short pursued Mullins with red lights and siren as Mullins sped through Norwalk streets, ignoring traffic signals and peeling tires.
In Shadyside Ohio four people including three children died when a mobile home burned Sunday. Victims were Jane Williams 21 and her infant Debbie 18 months William six weeks old and Tracy Adams 12 a neighbor girl. Williams husband William 27 rushed for help but was burned during rescue attempts. Police report indicate the fire began in the kitchen. The incident occurred near Shadyside along Route 61.
Seneca County Jail escapees Larry Hall and Bruce Carpender were captured Sunday morning northeast of Norwalk after a coordinated search by 16 agencies plus a private plane and helicopter. They fled in a blue 1957 car, then ran through a field near D L Hamisfar's home. Carpender was arrested first, Hall later. Both tied to a stolen car and held on breaking and entering charges.
