The Melvin Osborne residence at 165 West Main Street was gutted by a late Friday fire. Fire chief Al Walters noted the blaze started near the refrigerator and the loss is insured. No occupants were home.
Norwalk High School celebrates a 10-8 win over Vermilion Sailors on Parents Night. Dale Perkins booted a third quarter field goal for the margin, while Doug Ott connected on key passes. Perkin and Ott led a hard fought victory after a long drought, as teammates and families cheered in a festive locker room scene.
The White House kept Friday’s top level Vietnam meeting secret while turning to Camp David. Reports from Saigon said a B52 bombing halt had been suspended after 36 hours as Communist actions rose. Nixon returns to Washington tonight.
Weather forecast for Norwalk calls for sunny days with high in low 80s and mild nights in mid 50s. Winds from west to southwest 10 to 15 mph today and Sunday, then southerly 5 to 10 mph. High 77 and low 51 listed for Norwalk. Marital license applications and local obituaries included.
Rev. George Hayduk, a controversial Norwalk poverty activist, moves to Sandusky as administrative assistant to Grover Banks. William Lewis will replace him as bi county field coordinator in Norwalk, earning $6,678 along with the Sandusky post.
Chicago reports Sen. Everett M. Dirksen knew his odds of surviving lung cancer surgery were about one in ten. The Daily News said he chose to proceed after doctors warned he might have only 18 months to live. Intimates say he planned for possible death or incapacity.
The Huron County Fair drew a full crowd Friday for Dan Fleener's Hurricane Hell Drivers show. The fair extends to Sunday with a 10 30 a m religious service, 2 p m high school band performances, and an 8 p m Demolition Derby open to locals with prizes and trophies. Exhibits stay open until 8 p m. open class and Junior Fair entries may be removed after 8 while commercial exhibits stay until 10 p m.
Norwalk High School marching band director James Mougey recalls forming a German Band in Wapakoneta with Neil Armstrong and two other boys. Armstrong played baritone horn and tuba, Mougey clarinet. The band lasted one year and reunited briefly at Armstrong’s homecoming. Mougey, a longtime music teacher, plans new programs for Norwalk High, including a potential girls glee club as his family plans to move from Medina to Norwalk.
