Two Albuquerque men Ben Abruzzo and Maxie Anderson become the first to attempt a fuel powered Atlantic crossing in a helium balloon. A US Navy helicopter responded to a mayday as the Double Eagle gondola carried food and radio gear. A Reykjavik spokesman said the crew reported being low on fuel and might have to land at sea.
Mostly cloudy conditions with a 50 percent chance of precipitation tonight and Tuesday. Lows near 60s tonight and highs in the 70s Tuesday. Moonset and sunset times noted. Ohio Power Siting Commission staff urge rejection of Ohio Edison's Erie Nuclear Plant project north of Berlin Heights citing lack of proven need, missing spent fuel storage and reprocessing facilities, and uncertain cost advantage over coal. Adjudication hearings begin later this month with public testimony set for Sept 26 at Berlin-Milan Middle School.
Los Angeles based Factors Etc Inc has filed a multimillion dollar suit against four local bootleggers and pirates of Elvis Presley memorabilia. Attorney Dan Litman says more suits will follow nationwide to halt unauthorized use of Elvis image or likeness. He declined to name defendants, seeking damages over a million dollars per defendant and injunctions to stop marketing Elvis memorabilia.
Billy Carter, brother of President Carter, said Budget Director Bert Lance has no intention of resigning over a financial matter. He stated Lance may be fired but will not quit, praising him as the best man in Washington and noting broad public support for Lance.
The Norwalk High Booster Club will meet at 8 tonight in the High School Library. Afterward, head coach Bob Hart will show films of the Truckers 20 to 7 victory over Huron from Friday night.
Jim Busek, 30, of Angling Road Collins, launches Thinking Out Loud a Reflector weekly column. The new feature will cover a wide range of topics beyond sports and personal experiences along with several other Reflector columnists.
In Huron County many jobs are filled through personal networks with little advertising. Mayor Wayne Goodsite favored advertising most openings in Norwalk, while certain positions in the Common Pleas Court and courthouse projects were filled without ads. Tim Smith and others illustrate hiring practices blurring lines between merit and kinship.
