The Agriculture Department reports warm conditions boosted crop progress with Illinois near 75 percent mature. Separately Congress passes a bill to restore Veterans Day on November 11, with the President expected to sign after House approval 410 to 6.
Nearly 400 steelworkers from Shelby Ohio demonstrated on the Capitol steps opposing Societe Imetal's proposed takeover of Copperweld Corp. Local 3057 president Weldon Strohm warned the French firm may reap profits without reinvesting and could close plants, calling it a fight for the community.
James P. Hoffa publicly says he believes his father James Hoffa is dead, noting he thought assassination was likely after the former Teamsters leader vanished. Governor George Wallace signs Alabama death penalty bill and says he hopes to see electrocutions.

Stanley Goldblum, former Equity Funding president and board chair, received three to ten years for forgery in Lake County Illinois. The judge ordered the term to run concurrently with an eight year California federal sentence. The Equity Funding scandal involved falsified assets and $2 billion in fake insurance policies.
Ronald Zoellner and Richard Reach faced off at a special Norwalk Airport Authority meeting over Zoellner's bid to oust Reach. The board debated fuel, leases, and alleged harassments as Zoellner defended his operation and urged a 20 year footing. The motion to remove Reach failed for lack of a second, with a decision set for Sept. 23.
