Conneaut Ohio Mayor Edward Griswold urged council to pass laws limiting train lengths after Norfolk & Western trains reached 250 cars. He noted past experiments with 500 car trains and planned to meet state legislators on the issue.
Voters decided primary elections in eight states with six Senate seats on the line. Republican incumbents in Arizona Utah Vermont and Colorado faced no strong opposition while Democratic incumbents in Maryland and New Hampshire were poised for renomination.
Nearly all of New York City's 900 public schools shut down as teachers strike in defiance of a court order, extending summer vacation for 1.12 million pupils for a second year. Across the nation strikes also disrupt Michigan East St. Louis and Madison Illinois, with only 3,000 of NYC's 60,000 teachers and 30,000 students reporting. Nixon campaign strategists seek to link Hubert Humphrey to four years of inflation while Nixon meets with business advisory group to push that narrative.
Hubert H. Humphrey campaigned as a peacemaker on a first cross country swing as Democratic nominee. He signaled flexibility on Vietnam bombing and troop withdrawals, opening in Philadelphia with a push for possible U S troop pullouts late this year or early next if elected president. Viet Cong terrorists storm Dan Trung High School in Saigon’s Cholon District killing a teacher and wounding three others during a noontime assault. Witnesses described two attackers guarding a rear entrance while a third fired into lunchrooms.

A federal grand jury was ordered to study who was responsible for the violence during the Democratic National Convention. Chief Judge William J. Campbell initiated the inquiry after Mayor Daley claimed media distorted coverage and defended police actions amid claims of over reaction and abuse by protesters.
Leonard J. Hay of Bismark, 31, was killed early today when his Long Transportation Co. truck slid on a slippery Taylor road, struck an abutment, and rolled over. He died en route to Wayne County General Hospital. Obituary on page 6.
Wallace and Nixon both gained in Sindlinger polls with George Wallace rising as a third party candidate. The Norwood Pa survey used telephone interviews of 1,877 adults for Sept 5-8 and compared to Aug 30-Sept 2 results.
Sen Edward M Kennedy drew large emotional crowds in Chicopee Mass as he backed Rep Edward P Boland in a tough primary. He endorsed the Humphrey Muskie national ticket and said he would not campaign aggressively but will speak out as the election unfolds.
President candidate George Wallace cancelled a Washington news conference and appears to have rejected naming former Kentucky Governor A B Happy Chandler as his running mate due to Chandler civil rights stance. Mrs Chandler said the meeting with Wallace aides showed no agreement and Chandler likely not chosen. Louisville Courier Journal said Chandler was scratched from the ticket because Wallace supporters objected to his civil rights posture.
The First United Methodist Church at 60 W. Main Norwalk plans a $300000 two story educational addition with 12600 square feet to serve nursery age through high school students. It will attach to the north side with main entrance on State Street and could add a third floor later. A chapel lounge and kitchenette are included with fireproof construction. A financial drive is planned and occupancy is hoped by year end 1969 after a congregational meeting.
