The Italian tanker with 40 sailors aboard was reported adrift in the Hurricane Faith wreck area as seas battered the engine room and water flooded the vessel.
Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson secures initial passage for a bill to end Canada’s 15 million dollar daily rail shutdown despite Conservative opposition. If unions defy once law, Pearson’s government could fall. Hurricane Faith weakens near the coast as it moves offshore with 110 mph winds.
A tense calm followed a day of street violence in Benton Harbor Michigan after a Negro youth died from a gunshot wound. Willard Benefield was arrested then released after ballistics ruled out his weapon and alibis supported him. In Vietnam, U S casualties for the week ending Aug 27 totaled 687 wounded 87 KIA and 1 missing.

Dayton Ohio declared a state of emergency after a predawn shooting left Les ter Mitchell 39 injured by a car blasting a shotgun. City officials requested National Guard aid as looting and window breaking reported on the West Side. Commissioner Don Crawford, a Black official, toured the disturbance but tension remained high.
United Nations Secretary General Thant announced he will resign when his current five year term ends November 3 and will not seek a second term. He cited frustration with the UN’s effectiveness, especially in Vietnam, and said the Security Council should be unfettered in selecting a successor.
A Britannia Airways turbo-prop carrying 110 Britons collided with a tree while landing near Ljubljana and disintegrated in flames. Ninety people were killed with 27 survivors, some in critical condition, as authorities feared the toll would rise.
Miss Michigan Gayle Ann Chancey, 19, vanished after leaving Muskegon for Dearborn home five days before the Miss America Pageant. Police said they were not hunting for her. She drove alone in a flashy car marked with Miss Michigan and Miss America Pageant emblems.
Clarence Ellett was appointed deputy commissioner of health by the Huron County Board of Health. He will remain in charge of sanitation and take on additional administrative duties while his salary increases by 75 per month. The board, short a health commissioner since Dr. Hindley’s resignation, will explore a joint appointment with Seneca County and plan talks on duties and pay.
Bowling Green University's Tri County branch advances a peanut shaped campus plan revised from August. Key changes move initial buildings south 300 to 400 feet and relocate athletic facilities inside the inner ring. Entrance shifts to Rye Beach Road with a planned second entry from Boss Road and parking for 600 vehicles.
