Maj Ponchon the dog that served with the 59th Aviation Company in Korea has died. Adopted in 1951 during a harsh winter, she earned the rank of major in the unit and became a beloved fixture, dancing to a harmonica and keeping lonely pilots company until the end.
State education officials investigate alleged kickbacks from yearbook photographers. Attorney General Saxbe said evidence shows a Lorain high school sought a 20 to 30 percent rebate under a sweetheart contract. The case, referred by the Justice Department, will be reviewed by the state superintendent.

Millard Norton Payne, 59, of Bloomville, escaped serious injury when his car clipped a power pole, toppled a 14 foot embankment, and landed in a gravel pit near U.S. 99 at Evingin Road south of Monroeville. He was treated at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital and cited for speeding.

Police initially feared a master thief, but tips from callers to police, the institute, and a city room revealed the work was stolen as a prank. A teen voiced that the painting was hidden in a basket at the Grant Park band shell entrance after being removed from its frame.
