United Press International notes Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Americans should set clocks back one hour on Saturday night before bed and reclaim an hour of sleep as Halloween weekend begins.
President Ford personally approved the sale of a sophisticated computer system to the Peoples Republic of China after confirming no military use. He also approved a similar sale to the Soviet Union amid interagency debates with the Energy Research and Development Administration and some Pentagon officials opposing the moves.
UPI reports the worst Japanese fire in 15 years struck Sakata, destroying over 1,000 houses and leaving 3,500 homeless. Two missing and at least 35 injured were noted, with the blaze likely started by an overheated boiler in a movie house. Sakata lies about 220 miles north of Tokyo.
