A Huron County official said 7100 gallons of gasoline valued at 2485 dollars were stolen from a Phillips 66 bulk plant on Route 250. A cut telephone line disrupted service to about 30 residents near Greenwich Milan Town Line Road. Unemployment in Ohio stood at 2.8 percent for September, the lowest on record. An explosion at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base injured two workers with severe burns. In Cairo, President Abboud seized dictatorial powers amid rioting that killed at least 11 and injured 120. In South Viet Nam, 30 Viet Cong guerrillas were killed and 40 captured in three days of fighting in Quang Ngai Province.
Pearl Austin Ewell 69 longtime Milan photographer and board member of Public Affairs died in Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He owned Ewell Studio and belonged to the Professional Photographers Association Fire lands Camera Club Milan Chamber of Commerce and local boards. Survivors include his wife a daughter two sisters a brother and several nieces and nephews. Services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Rawle Funeral Home with calling after 7 p.m. this evening.
Weather shows considerable cloudiness and mild conditions with light showers in the northwest. Low tonight 47 to 53. Wednesday partly cloudy and mild with highs 68 to 74. Births include a girl to Leo Weis Jr in Attica and several other families. Deaths list Gregory Weston and Pearl Austin Ewell with ages and locations.
Guthrie told about 200 at the Huron County Farm Bureau meeting that Americans should watch and listen to presidential candidates, discuss what they say, and think for themselves. He warned against letting media personalities drive decisions and stressed evaluating what is said, not just appearances.
At Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital the expansion project forces several departments to relocate. Administrator William Slabodnick says offices walls intrusions drive moves from the lobby and record room to the doctors library and lounge. A temporary shuffle includes the director of nurses and accounting, with the doctors classroom becoming a pediatric playroom and Slabodnick occupying the central supply room.
Santo Amara, an inspector for Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, died about 2:45 a.m. at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital from injuries in a turnpike collision five miles west of the Norwalk-Sandusky interchange. His wife and Morris Tringali, 69, of Dearborn, were hospitalized with injuries. The Tringali car was struck from behind by a Toledo teen driver, David Wellman, 17, sending the vehicle off the road and overturning. The incident, under Turnpike Patrol investigation with no charges yet, occurred in Erie County as Amara and Tringali were returning from a trip to Europe. Funeral arrangements for Amara will be handled by a Detroit funeral home.
Nine Marines killed and 13 injured when two Sikorsky H34 helicopters collided 800 feet above Huelva beaches during the Steel Pike I amphibious landing drill. The tragedy cast a cloud over the largest peacetime landing exercise as 94 ships and about 60 000 personnel carried out the operation.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile exceeded its goal of 125 pints by donating 153 pints yesterday in Norwalk. Forty six new donors, including 33 from Columbia Gas Co, boosted participation under chair Mrs. Oscar Komarek. New donors include Helen Shearon Clyde Andrew O Brien Anne F Martin and others from Collins Bellevue Huron Milan Monroeville Vermilion Norwalk. Church groups supplied meals and Xi Alpha Eta Beta Sigma Phi ran the canteen.
Decoration Gifts donors total 3225 dollars for Norwalk walk Christmas decor program. Contributors include Citizens National Bank 250 and Home Savings and Loan 250 plus many local businesses such as J C Penney 50, Western Auto 25, Woolworth 50, Kay's Shoes 35, and Kaiser Wells Rexall 150 among others.
