Firestone Agrees to Record Recall of 500 Series Tires
Akron based Firestone Tire & Rubber Co settles the dispute with the U S Transportation Department over the Firestone 500 series tires. The recall could reach 7.5 million units and cost about 230 million dollars. The agreement follows reports of 41 deaths and 65 injuries linked to tire failures.

Costly Blaze at Stockton Shell Facility
A 150000 gallon gasoline storage tank at a Shell Oil Co facility in Stockton California caught fire and ignited an adjacent tank. Norwalk Man Burned as Harvester Fire Rages
Paul Hammersmith and his father Edward Hammersmith were operating a harvester on South Old State Road when smoke billowed from the engine. Edward, 65, sustained arm burns while trying to suppress the blaze. The harvester was destroyed and an insurance adjuster was to inspect the damage.

Fire Closes Mansfield Plant After Large Blaze
A Mansfield Ohio fire damaged a Rogate Industries plant with seven firefighters treated for smoke inhalation. The blaze forced evacuations of nearby homes due to feared sulphuric acid tank ignition.
