Dublin born novelist and playwright Samuel Beckett won the 1969 Nobel Prize for Literature. The award carries a $72,500 prize and is the third of six Nobel prizes announced that year.

In Painesville Ohio officials link three fires at Selective Service draft record offices to a single overall plan. Col William Clare deputy director asserts the fires may involve different individuals but share the same concept.
Xuan Thuy said antiwar demonstrations have a positive effect on the Vietnam peace talks and could break the deadlock. He praised Vietnam Moratorium Day as the genuine voice of the American people and pledged Hanoi support for further antiwar rallies at the conference. He and the Viet Cong accused Nixon of intensifying fighting.
Sgt Maj William O Wooldridge invokes the 5th Amendment and declines to testify at a Senate inquiry into an alleged racket by Army sergeants running 6l clubs. The Army also downgrades Wooldridge and three others tied to the scheme.

John A. Petroff, 19, of 91 North Railroad Street, was driving on State Route 60 north of the Huron Ashland county line at 2 30 a m when he lost control. His car went off the road, up an embankment and overturned before stopping on its wheels. He was treated at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital in Nor walk and later moved to Elyria Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Petroff is a 1968 New London High School graduate living with his mother and stepfather.
A nine man team from the Norwalk post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol won the district pistol plaque for the Superintendent's Cup with an average of 252.666 of 300. Marietta led statewide with 264.666. Sergeant J H Ross, the firearms instructor, led Norwalk by finishing fourth overall. The Norwalk squad faced Sandusky, Fremont, Mansfield, Marion and Bucyrus in the second district shoot held July 31, with several members scoring high averages and no top three individuals needed for the team win. The Norwalk auxiliary also captured the cup in a dual shoot at Milan Red and Gun Club on September 27.
Four city councilmen and Service Director William V. Mount will meet Tiffin Service Director Adam Brickner tonight to study Tiffin's ambulance system. Cunningham proposed the inquiry after visiting Friday. Tiffin relies on 13 volunteers and three vehicles to cover Seneca County at a $25,000 annual cost.
