In Saigon a US jet fighter bomber mistook 18 South Vietnamese paratroopers defending Pace base near the Cambodian border for enemy troops. An FAC directed two A37 Dragonflies, and one dropped 500 pound bombs, killing 18 and wounding seven plus several others.

Sheriff John Borgia warns Huron County residents especially seniors to beware of callers claiming to run a banking investigation. A 83 year old Erie County man was scammed out of 5500 dollars in 100 dollar bills after a man in a dark suit posed as a bank investigator and collected the decoy funds. The ruse mirrors a similar incident in Norwalk.
Delegates at the International Synod of Bishops rejected changes to the vow of celibacy. Six of twelve committees voted against allowing married priests, with one divided on permitting elderly married men.
Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin arrived in Ottawa for a second round of talks with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau under one of peacetime Canada’s heaviest foreign-visitor security shields. He appeared unhurt after Monday’s incident and smiled as guards surrounded him at the Parliament building while a small protest group chanted.
