Complains But He’s Off Hook Over Leaf Pickup Notice

Councilman G Ira Liedorff complained about short notice for boulevard leaf collection but admitted a silver lining. Service Director Morley Price said schedules cannot be set days early due to uncertain routes and weather. Liedorff noted his wife had to rake as rain limited progress on Norwood and Christie routes.

Kresge dies founder of mountain home chain

Kresge, founder of the Kresge variety store chain, died at his Mountain Home Pennsylvania home on Tuesday after years of declining health since July when he stepped down as chairman of the board. In Vietnam, torrential rains halt air and ground action along the DMZ while fighting flares in the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta. three US helicopters were shot down. In Oslo the Nobel Peace Prize Committee says it will defer the prize until next year with no reason given.

Rubber Workers Strike Swan Rubber Plants

About 1,300 members of United Rubber Workers Local 6073 went on strike at Swan Rubber Co. two plants in the area. Personnel Director Carl Dunn said operations had not shut down though only a few workers remained. The union set up massive picketing at both sites and reported a violence incident at one plant.

Milan Expansion To Hit 950000

Milan Clevite Corp announces a 950000 program to expand the Harris Division rubber mixing facilities. Kenneth M. Leighton says plans for equipment layout are under way and Dalton Dalton Associates will design a new three story building of about 15000 square feet, to begin early 1967 and finish by year end. The project is expected to not significantly boost employment but supports a five year expansion that added about 125 jobs. Harris Division serves automotive appliance and industrial markets with rubber metal parts and polymers for shock isolation.

United Fund Drive Faces Shortfall in Norwalk

Beeman says the United Fund goal of 55700 may be missed after a two week extension. After three weeks the campaign is about halfway complete as out of town workers contribute to other places. Parke and Beeman urge residents to return pledge cards and give even small amounts to keep local agencies funded.

Norwalk High Plans Homecoming Hootenanny Week Festivities

The Norwalk Booster Club hosts a bonfire at Whitney Field at 7 p m as part of pre homecoming events. Cheerleaders Pep Club and the band sponsor a rally and snake dance ending at the high school. At halftime of the Friday game against Upper Sandusky the club will give away a football.

Police report a possible break in the murder case of theologian Robert W. Spike. An unidentified man seen leaving the United Christian Center near the time of the killing carried a about three foot long tool with a red colored end, police said.

Talks Break In GE Strike at Bellevue Lamp Plant

About 550 IAM Local 215 workers at the General Electric Bellevue Lamp Plant walked off Sunday night after two months of talks. Supervisor Perusek declined comment on Tuesday's mediation with Harry Grey, saying the strike is ongoing and no new negotiator times are set. The union seeks across the board raises plus job security and promotion procedures, while GE offered a four percent raise first year and three percent in each of the next two years.

Boy Dies in Birmingham Gun Cleaning Accident

A six year old Birmingham boy, Jeffrey Novello Black, died after a shotgun discharge while helping his uncle clean a gun at his grandmother’s home near Norwalk. The death was ruled accidental by Huron County Coroner Dr. William Holman. Jeffrey, born in Amherst, attended Birmingham kindergarten and is survived by his parents, sister, and many relatives. Funeral arrangements set for Friday at 2 p.m. with burial in Rest Lawn Cemetery.
