Maryland researchers say sterilized milk may stay fresh at room temperature for months and cost less than pasteurized milk. The concept envisions buying milk like Coke and chilling it at home when desired.
UPI reports a secret State Department summary says the United States is legally bound to supply oil to Israel if a new Arab embargo occurs as part of Kissinger mediated Sinai accord assurances. The administration marks 16 as binding and 29 moral obligations among 45 assurances. An Atlanta note tells of Sgt Charles Causey not recognizing his wife Monica at Hartsfield airport after she lost 156 pounds during his Italy tour.
New York faced a prolonged default scare as city funds moved to avert a crisis. Trustees of the teachers pension plan agreed to contribute 150 million dollars to a 2.3 billion state bailout, easing obligations due December 1. UPI reported that Congress may act to aid the city, with ONeill urging federal help.

Norwalk's fire rating rose after Insurance Services of Ohio evaluated the city. The improved rating, now at five from six, should cut commercial and industrial insurance premiums by about 15 percent. Mayor Wayne Goodsite credited Fire Inspector Donald Hohler and upgraded equipment and water lines, including looped dead end lines, for the gain.
